I was given this book for Christmas when I was 12 years old. Have read it many times since. The first part was the basis for the Disney cartoon The Sword In The Stone. The remaining 3 parts inspired the musical Camelot.

The Sword In The Stone can be read as a stand-alone; it is more of a children’s story or novella. The latter 3 parts are a rather sophisticated retelling of Thomas Mallory’s Mort D’Arthur, which tells the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It’s written in contemporary English, so it is more accessible than the original source material.

The whole tetralogy is worth reading for anyone with an interest in myths and legends.

I was not the biggest fan of this book. For a variety of reasons. I am a huge fan of Arthurian mythology, and though I did like this book for some of those Arthurian themes, I couldn’t stand this book. There’s so much good Arthurian out there, but this one just left a nasty taste in my mouth and I couldn’t wait to part ways with it.
