Also the author suggests you read the first three books from the series and then read the infernal devices and then finish the last three books in the immortal instruments

I started reading the series when I was about 16/17 and now I’m turning 26-still following the series, still reading her books. I’ve loved all her works and think it’s absolutely worth it. My favorite was The Infernal Devices. She started with the Mortal Instruments and you can definitely see how her writing has grown over the years. I love the Shadowhunter Chronicles ?

Thanks for the positive comments. I’ve read a lot of bad reviews and I don’t know if I should listen to them.

Your mileage may vary, but I stopped a few pages into the first chapter of the first book and have zero interest in continuing.

I devoured books 1-5 years ago, now doing a re-read and plan on interspacing with the Infernal Devices as recommended. I think the books are still worth reading — though I don’t think the Netflix show is worth watching ?

I haven’t seen the series though. What made interested to read Mortal Instruments is the likes/loves it gets from lost of people. It got 1M+ ratings on Goodreads with average of 4.12. Plus I got Infernal Device set here. Still in plastic.

@JJ Its a very beloved fictional world!
Just out of curiosity, what edition do you have of TID? I have Clockwork Prince and Clockwork Princess but can’t find Clockwork Angel in the same edition and I cant tell online which one is the right one!

I haven’t read the Draco Trilogy. Most of them said that the characters are similar to Harry Potter.

2
Maria

I haven’t either, HP isn’t my thing. But I have friends who have and apparently she lifted dialogue straight from other books/tv shows/fanfics and also her bullying of younger people back in her hp days is recorded. I told myself I would never give her books a chance after that. It’s yours choice and I’m sorry if my comment came across as too harsh but based on that I always tell people not to read her stuff

2
JJQuestion author

No it’s ok. I’ve been debating with myself wether to read it. I’ve got Infernal Device set here, but my friend told me that I shouldn’t read it before the first 3 books of Mortal Instruments. I had no idea Infernal Devices is a prequel. I thought it is a separate novel. Lol

2
Maria

I did read some excepts from the first book since several people I know were going nuts over it and I also found the writing to be very poor

2
Jeanette

Omg finally someone acknowledges this! My mind always thinks about that whenever I see her books now. Honestly, Cassandra Clare’s plagiarism claims and bullying is what’s preventing me from reading her books. I heard she and her fans bullied someone on Twitter after that person made one negative comment about Clare’s books. Just because it happened in the past, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen at all.
I bought the first book (City of Bones) at a library sale for cheap. This was before I heard about her past as a writer. I’m going to read it anyway because I’m curious on what all of the hype is about. I’m probably not going to continue with the series after that though. There’s way too many books and I’m not that interested in reading them. I have books that are higher on my TBR list. I tend to be turned off by overly popular books/series and lean more towards the underrated ones. Harry Potter isn’t my thing either!

3
Surya

Who’s the bully? Sorry, I am not aware of behind the display stories and I hate bullies and plagiarism.

0
Maria

@Surya Cassandra Clare was notorious among fanfiction circlers for being something of a “Big Name Fan” bc of the popularity of her fics and she and her friends/fans often bullied other smaller writters or fans (keep in mind she was something like 30 bullying literal teenagers). She also plagiarized A LOT from others. I can’t post links rn bc I’m on my phone, but despite her and her lawyers efforts to scrub the internet clean of her shitty ways plenty of information is still available about her past.

4
Surya

@Maria Thank you so much for the info. If you haven’t said that, I wouldn’t have known. <3

1
Stacy

Yes, the plagiarism and bullying is a big reason why I will not bother with her books ever again. There are blogs and whatnot that share exactly what she plagiarized and her bullying but most of them have disappeared because Clare doesn’t want it out there. I’ve also seen some devoted fans upset about how Clare treated them at book signings. Apparently she bullies other authors as well.

IMO NO. I couldn’t even force myself through the first book but many people love it. Maybe borrow it from the library before deciding if you want to purchase it?

2

JJQuestion author

What made you dislike it?

0
Stephanie

@JJ I just couldn’t get into it. To me, it was boring. The characters were flat. The plot was lacking. I bought it because so many people raved about it and I wanted to read it before the movie came out but after a month of trying to force myself to read it (I normally finish reading a book within 3-6 days) I gave up with only thirty pages left and watched the movie, which I also didn’t care for. I don’t know if the hype made me expect more? I know that can often be the case. I bought the book and ended up donating it without ever finishing it and I’m usually dedicated to reading anything I actually buy til the end even if I can’t stand it so that said something for me.

1
Stephanie

I tried to read the bane chronicles which I purchased on iBooks as well and couldn’t get into them so I’m thinking i just don’t care for Clare’s writing style.

0
JJQuestion author

I’ve seen people complained the same thing. Flat characters, boring. Also they said that it’s one of the most badly written fantasy in history and that the author copied Harry Potter and Star Wars. Lol I don’t know. I couldn’t start on Infernal Device and I’ve checked the price of Mortal Instruments… expensive. I don’t have time for 3-4 hours drive to the library.

0
Stephanie

@JJ aw that stinks the library is so far away for you. Do they have online borrowing for the kindle or ePub available to you? I just found out my library offered that in the last year or two. But yes, I have to agree. I felt the same. I have seen a lot of controversy regarding Clare’s work across the internet over the years as well.

0
Jessica

Omg Agreed. I got about 50 pages in. It is very out of touch with teenagers.

1
Stephanie

They’re pretty good, definitely worth reading, the writing can get a little bit repetitive. I think you should maybe read the first 2 and see if you like them enough to buy the rest. I’m on book 5 and I’ve gotten them all from the library or overdrive, because to me they’re not worth buying, but you may love them enough to buy them.

I would not recommend them, at all. I had to force myself to make it to the third book and then after that I just couldn’t do it anymore. There are many reasons why I wouldn’t recommend this series but those are just my opinions. Honestly I would try to get the first book from a library or a friend and give it a try and see if you enjoy it all before you waste money on it. IMO there are much better series out there.

Typical mediocre paranormal YA. I’m glad I didn’t buy them.

I liked it when I was younger but I liked it a bit less as I got older. If you still like most YA as an adult, you should be fine.

I thought I liked the first 3 (years ago) but the fourth book bored me to death and seemed like a rehash of the first, and I started seeing how problematic it was. I don’t care for the author for many reasons so I’ve sworn off reading any of books again. Like a comment just above, they are pretty mediocre.
