Depends on how much you read/what you like to read. I have found enough in the KU library to make it worth the cost, but others have not. Amazon usually runs a special on KU during prime Day..I think I got a whole year for $80 last July.

I just signed up for a Prime day deal, 99 cents for 3 months. There are a lot of graphic novels and shorter stories that caught my interest. If you read a lot, yes it’s worth it.

99 cents for 3 months? Are you kidding? Cool.

I couldn’t pass it up

@Howard I am definitely signing up for that one once my free trial is over. Thanks for sharing.

It wasn’t worth it for me – didn’t have the books I was looking for. If you aren’t looking for particular authors or subjects, then it would be fine.

I found the books offered on Unlimited didn’t really match my reading preferences. Before signing up, I suggest checking out the KU library. I find they don’t include many current books of interest nor anything by some of my favorite authors. However, depending on what you like to read, it may suit.

I agree with you and Kate Welch May – the selection is limited – despite the “un” they use!
When I first joined this book club, I created a list of 15 books that you all were reading that struck my fancy. Not one of them was on KU.
I’m interested in the library you mentioned – I’ll check that out.
KU is great if you want to read random books – I’ve used it for a couple of years, but it seems that I’ve read what I wanted and now I’m done; not much new added.

I think a better investment is an out-of-state library card with the Free Library of Philadelphia ( https://know.freelibrary.org/MyResearch/register ). It’s $50 a year (free if you are a veteran). They have an excellent selection of current books in Kindle and ePub format. A library account also gives you access to hoopla (https://www.hoopladigital.com/) and hundreds of movies, ebooks, audiobooks, and comics.

The only downside is that the most popular ebooks and audiobooks in the library have wait lists.

I’m a library professional and I love my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I’m also a graduate student and thus have access to public and academic libraries, but my subscription is a cheap indulgence. Worth every dime to me.

It is to me. It also includes many titles with narration (audiobooks.)

Personally, I don’t think so. It’s basically a library card… that you have to pay for.

The selection, to me, only had about 40% of the books I’d be interested in reading.

I don’t like it, because I dont get to keep the books. I need to know what I have already read ? & the authors dont necessary get paid as much as they would otherwise.

I love it, I am part of 2 monthly challenges and use it to pick the books I will read.

KU has very bad miscategorization, which can be super misleading. To me, it’s junk yard library with upfront fees and skewed bestseller category lists. It’s full of aliens in multiracial category, non-Christmas books shoved under Christmas section, and a whole lot of other crazy crap.

Compilations or collections are 10-15 previously published books put together by one author, with one new publication shoved in the middle somewhere. These guys get paid per pages, which is why some authors encourage page flipping even if you don’t read them.

Amazon has been under fire since there are simpler solutions to their program but eh. We’ll see! I’m interested in watching since I love programs and security.

I don’t know the answer, but there is a deal right now for prime day. 3 months for $.99 or 40% off a year (I think)

http://scribd.com/ is way better with a good selection, and is back to unlimited. Kindle Unlimited is 95 percent independently published books.

I love it. I feel it depends on what you want to read. Best selling and new releases are what you want then this is not for you. However older novels, self-published independent it is a good deal. I read 10 plus novels off it a month and then purchase other novels that are best selling to supplement. I have created wish lists for the books I want to read so I can always find something. I am not too fussy about what I read, however. I am a romance junkie at times and it is perfect for that. I also love a good fairy tale too.

I gave it up after a short trial. I found a lot of the books listed were under $6 to purchase, and I like to retain books in my library. Matching the purchase price against the subscription, I thought it much better to buy the books, for me and for the author. So I weighed up the strengths and weaknesses of Kindle unlimited and opted out.

I did the trial when it was $1.99 for 3 months and when it ends I will not be renewing. If there us a deal for a short term, I’d give it a try. For me, I felt the book selection was lacking in the types of books that I prefer. I also only read 3-4 books per month, and can usually get deals on books for $2 or $3 ea. So since its a wash. I’d rather just buy the specific books I want.
