I was just trying to figure out what classifies something as YA. No graphic sex and violence? I’m okay with that. There are many YA books that are well written with great characters and stories, and there are plenty of adult books I have read that are real stinkers.

Exactly

Heather

I always think of YA as a story that revolves around first person that’s a teen or young adult. I am probably wrong.

0
Jackie

Maybe, but I’m sure there are adult books (like IT by Stephen King) that are centered around kids/teens that I wouldn’t classify as YA

This is the formal definition I found for YA

Young adult fiction (YA) is a category of fiction published for readers in their youth. YA books are catered towards readers from 12 to 18 years of age.[1] While the genre is targeted to teenagers, approximately half of YA readers are adults.[2]

Subject matters and the genres of YA correlate with the “age and experience” of the protagonist and subsequent supporting characters, typically facing “real world” problems as the story progresses. The genres available in YA are expansive and similar to those found in adult fiction genres. Common themes related to YA include: friendship, first love, relationships, and identity.[3] Stories that focus on the specific challenges of youth are sometimes referred to as problem novels or coming-of-age novels.[4]

YA was developed to soften the transition between children’s novels and adult literature.[5] In recent years, diversity has become a defining feature of young adult novels.

Actually they don’t agree on what age group YA is for some say 12 to 18, and some say 15 to 25. The truth is they really don’t know and some of the books I read even the teen section of Library have plenty of sexual material it may not be graphic but it was more information than I needed, and more than you find in a typical adult section.

Honestly I don’t consider YA a real genre I think a lot of stuff just being thrown into it. I read books I don’t care who they were written for, I’m just getting really tired of books being taken from sections in the library so they can be thrown into the new ya section. I found books are previously considered adult fiction, juvenile fiction, removed and put there. I am starting to think that half of these books are just called that for marketing purposes.

Melissa

for the most part I agree, but for books such as Fifty Shades Of Grey and stuff, I think those should be meant for people mature enough to read them

3
January

I don’t consider 50 Shades of Grey a YA. All I am saying is the young adult section is new for the libraries I have seen over the last five years, and all they’ve done is steal books from the juvenile fiction section, the adult section, and even the teen section, and put them in the new YA section. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be sections I’m just saying this section isn’t needed.

I think we appreciate them more as adults. Sometimes, the simplest lessons are the ones we need to get lost in, to feel their magic & adventure. After a long day of adulting, who wants to open themselves up to more bs lol.
