Is anyone reading a non-fantasy book? I threw some Patterson crap across the room yesterday because I JUST COULDNT….

I read Artemis by Andy Weir recently.
I enjoyed Artemis.
i likes the Martian he did. Snarky and cute and nerdy!
@Lewys I liked that one too
I am currently rereading “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” I needed something more lighthearted and this fits that perfectly.
Classic!
I tried but I just couldn’t get into this book.
@John I think you have to be a little drunk. ?? but it’s fun and fast
I don’t think I could get drunk enough to enjoy it.
you could try
I love historical fiction too. I read Elizabeth Chadwick and a few others in that category.
Did you ever do Outlander? It looks “interesting “
@Hannah , I listened to the audiobook. The narrator was fantastic!
@Hannah I tried it. I liked the first book. But not enough to keep reading.
@Kathy a great narrator makes the difference!
@Jean I’ve tried a few times too but with the recent commercial success I assumed I missed something.
@Hannah no I don’t think we missed anything! There’s just way better books out there. Lol
my mom read it and loved….
I prefer non-fiction when I am not reading fantasy.
I can do a bit of non-fiction. Art of War, Gift of Imperfection, The Subtle Art of Not giving a F*ck, and memoirs. Born a Crime has me laughing out loud!
I tried reading “zoo” by one of his many ghostwriters. I had seen some of the show and thought it was a good concept, but both the book and show failed in all other ways.
I can’t waste the time. Ugh!
My husband likes Patterson. He’s not a reader. I’m going to set him up with The Druid Chronicles and see if I can convert him.
I think if your a casual reader it’s probably great. But… geez. It’s really bad.
I keep trying to get through this but I fall asleep so easy.
Aha, if you fall asleep listening/reading to this you should see maps of meaning
I highly recommend his lectures on the psychological significance of the biblical stories though!
Right now, I am reading one of the Great Courses, “Redefining Reality “. It’s good so far.
I have a guilty fondness for contemporary YA. Just read What if it’s Us and Fangirl and loved them
@Morgan I really enjoyed Fangirl. Have you read anything else by Rainbow Rowell?
YA has quickly become a mirror to the younger generation. Done correctly, i usually end up being able to talk to my kids about a lot of issues I otherwise wouldn’t.
Just finished Blood Meridian. It’s tough, but so good.
I really like Cormac McCarthy and think I read somewhere that Blood Meridian is considered his best work! It’s on my shelf somewhere and I really need to read it!
I may try that one! Good recommendation thanks!
I just started Devil in the White City. A friend who likes to read history recommended it and since I’m not that into dates and details, I might abandon it if it gets to dry for me. I do read stuff in addition to fantasy though. Mostly historical fiction, horror, thrillers, ethnographies, and some classics.
Oh that one I haven’t heard about. Let me know how it is.
The only non fantasy I can read is kurt vonaguet, his fiction is just quick, witty and right enough for me… but that’s about it.
That’s because he’s so freaking cleaver and says what we would NEVER say out loud and at times even admit to ourselves
@Hannah so true!!!!! So clever!
The last non-fantasy book I read was The Goldfinch…that’s been awhile!
Ugh and that one was “good” just about 150 pages too long – and essentially you stopped caring about the painting.
@Hannah Yes…I absolutely agree. I just didn’t get all the philosophical stuff she threw in at the end. It read more like a long and boring college thesis!
i recently read “the immortalitist“ and had similar feelings. The first 1/2 was fantastic… I trudged through the last half
I’m reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I read it about 25 years ago so it’s basically new to me now. ? I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately- I just finished all 16 of Robin Hobbs books which were amazing so it’s been hard to find something comparable.
@Megan I love Rebecca!
Daphne’s Du Maurice is basically brilliant. She can spin the best gothic horror.
She’s awesome!
@Jean … I remember being late for work to read her!! Just amazing.
@Hannah!!!! That’s awesome!!! Your my,kind of reader!!!
@Hannah she is the reason why I did not cook my turkey last night haha.
Probably why I didn’t date in high school too ❤️???
From time to time something slips through. I last read The blind assassin and enjoyed it. But it’s Atwood so I felt I was in the proximity of sci-fi so I was safe ?
I’m about to train to teach so I’ve been reading this about Growth Mindset. It’s relevant to everyone though. Best thing I’ve read for ages.
After some searching I found the Deathlands books. It’s a post apocalyptic tale. Each book about 400 pages n over a hundred of them. They are good reads n every book is like Star Trek, a different place every book. I really like them. Just up to book 5. It’s ddef difderent, but good.
I like a variety and read fantasy. historical fiction and thrillers but fantasy is my favourite
I mostly read non-fiction. I’m reading like 10 books right now and maybe 2 of them are fantasy.
Memoirs are my favorite nonfiction . It’s interesting insight.
I read fantasy, science fiction, pulp, thrillers, horror
Limited by genre is silly
Ugh fantasy is hard… and thrillers have to be really good!!! Horror (just no ???)
I read historic Age of Sail fiction; I like good Regency fiction, when I can find it (so far I have only Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer 🙁 ) I read quite a lot of non-fiction as well – mostly history (1760-1830) and Irish Mythology.
Although it’s Victorian fiction, Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South reminded me of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I stumbled upon the 2004 BBC mini series and loved it. Then I learned about the book which the series is based on. I admit I found the language a bit difficult to get used to, especially the northern dialect, but it was a great read.
I’ve kept up with a few non-genre favorites such as Michael Chabon and Paul Auster over the years.
I don’t think I’ve read any of there’s
I find Patterson to be really annoying. All his books are the same. And he has this thing he does where he really over-dramatizes things that are really obvious as if they are a huge surprise.
I am currently ‘reading’ (on audio) Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling). I’m really enjoying it. 🙂
@Mike Cuckoo’s Calling was great. The second and third books are equally good. Haven’t read the latest but I’ve heard good things. Enjoy! ?
I did The Robert Galbraith books a few years ago. They interesting more because the “Hero” was so incredibly flawed.
