I bought a book for a swap on Litsy and it was one I had wanted to read. I told my husband, “I wonder if there is any chance I can read this really quickly before I send it out.” ?

I mean, you have to make sure it lives up to its reputation

Just to make sure it was a suitable gift.

Why guilty? Before you send out as a gift, I think it’s quite normal to check if the book has any mistake or wrong printing.

I tend to gift books that I’ve already read. How else would I know if the books were good or not?

That’s what I do as well, unless somebody has an author (my mother in law always gets the new Grisham). I keep lists throughout the year as I read if I think it would fit one of my book gift receivers.

@Paul, I work in a library service center, so I see all the books before they get processed. I investigate the ones that look interesting to me or for someone i know.

As long as you don’t crack the spine or damage the cover, no harm no foul!

Years ago, I bought my mom Paula Deens autobiography. I skimmed it and stopped when she talked about as horny as a dog with two dicks. Not my mom’s cup of tea.

We actually encourage that in my family. One, so that we are giving a book worth reading. And two as a way to encourage reading.

When I was a kid my mom bought my cousin How to Eat Fried Worms for a present and I snuck in her drawer and read it, does that count?

I haven’t, but my husband bought me a book our first Christmas together after we were married and then read it himself before he gave it to me. He would hide in the guest room for an hour or more and was vey secretive. I thought he was mad about something! Once he gave me the book, I got it, because I couldn’t put it down, either.

I thought you weren’t supposed to keep secrets in a relationship…hmmm, guess there are exceptions to that rule in important matters ?

1
Jean

@Loukas True, but he finally ‘fessed up, so I forgave him!

No, because I rarely buy books, just gift cards for books, such as for my mom and brother. We have completely different reading styles, and I couldn’t even begin to gauge what they already read or wanted to read.
