The paper white will last longer as far as battery, but you’ll be reading on a clearly black and white/gray story of screen.

Whereas the kindle fire will have the perfectly white background and can be used for other things like a normal tablet, but it drains a lot faster.

I have only owned a Fire HD, so I can’t speak to the capabilities of the paper white, this is just what I’ve heard.

If you’re using it primarily for reading, Paper White is the way to go. I have both and I much prefer the Paper White.

I have a kindle fire and love it. If you have any interest in graphic novels it is the better choice due to it being color.

If you want to mainly read get the Paperwhite. You only read on the Paperwhite. If you want to read and use apps, get the Fire. It’s harder to read on the fire because it’s like a phone screen.

I much prefer my paper white to my fire for reading. There’s no glare and it doesn’t give me a headache like my fire does.

If you just want it for reading get a paperwhite. It gives the most book like experience and won’t hurt your eyes at night.

I work at a library and patrons come in all the time wanting to get digital/audiobooks from the library on their paper white. Unfortunately, you can’t so if you just want books off of amazon it’s fine but if you want to download other apps and be able to read off of them I’d go with the fire.

@Chelsey I’m able to get library books on my kindle. I just choose to download to kindle once I check it out and it brings me to amazon to get it. I use Libby.

The paper white is great if you just want for reading. Looks like a book and you can read it outside plus very lightweight. You can do anything else but read books on it so it depends what you want with it.

Sooooo….let’s talk business! Ha ha! I have had the kindle fire for about three years. I listen to music on it at work, do a bit of random stuff, occasionally watch netflix and of course READ! Two weeks ago I went to one of my moms doctors appointments (they are about seven hours each) and two hours before the appointment ended and the book got really good….it died! Yikes! Not only is my fire getting a lil old and not keeping charge as well, but i didn’t have access to charge 🙁 Its very bright for reading at night and you can’t read it outside in the daylight 🙁 I asked for the paper white for Christmas. ITS AMAZZZING! And I am on book 3 since Christmas…still haven’t re-charged it once! 😀 😀 It’s small and beautiful! All I need now is a case that props it up! No more leaning on bags and bottles to read while I eat! Either way they have both their ups and downs! But I say go paperwhite!

If you strictly want to read you’ll want the paperwhite. It’s less harsh on your eyes and easier to hold for long periods of time.
The fire is great for apps and videos but super harsh on your eyes and heavy.

Paperwhite if you just going to read…it is gentler on the eyes. kindle fire is great if you are looking for a tablet/ ereader however the screen would mess with my eyes and it was heavier and more tiring to hold

I used to read on a fire, and I started getting these terrible migraines. I got glasses to see if it helped and nothing. I decided to switch to paperwhite and it all magically disappeared. I think it all comes down to how much are you going to use it- as many have mentioned, paperwhite is better on the eyes, super light (your hand won’t get cramped from reading) and it stays charged for weeks. Fire is just a regular tablet.

Paperwhite. I use mine strictly for reading, everything else would be too distracting. It’s so much easier on the eyes and easier to read outside in sunlight.

Oasis, it’s water proof. You can read in the shower or pool! If not that then paperwhite for sure. Fire is like reading off an ipad or phone

The newest paper white is waterproof too ☺️

0
Amanda

@Kari ooh that’s cool! Does it have buttons? My paperwhite was touch screen only

0
Barbara

I don’t like the new one. My phone is actually taller than it and a bit of glare the old one didn’t have.

And nope, no buttons.

0
Amanda

I don’t think the waterproof feature works if there is not a button. Have to disable the touch screen to use in water

Paper white. I have both and while reading on the fire is okay, it’s too much like a phone and isn’t as easy on your eyes.

I don’t recomend the new paperwhite. I’m actually sending that one back. The new one have a glare the old one didn’t have, and if you want something kind to your eyes the old one is the one to go. If you don’t mind, the kindle Fire, got one lasts mom’s day and I love it, just not for long marathons of reading.

@Stephanie I read on my iPad I think it has a setting where you can switch to black background with white letters and I’ve found that’s the easier way for my eyes

I’ve just switched from a fire to paperwhite & I’m struggling a bit. Silly things like a colour screen & layout so I’m hoping I’ll get used to it

Definitely paperwhite. The only pros of the fire is the colours. Paperwhite now gets audiobooks, is waterproof and the I ink screen is out of comparison to the fire’s regular screen

I have the Kindle Paperwhite and love it, however, it’s only for reading, no games. If you want free books you can sign up for Kindle unlimited, just be aware that they charge a monthly fee and if you decide to cancel you lose the books

If you like to read outside any, go with the paper white. The glare on this fire is so terrible you can’t see to read on the fire.

The paper white if you just want an eReader. The Fire if you’re looking for a little extra like YouTube and whatnot. As a straight up tablet with ebook capabilities I wouldn’t suggest the fire.

I got a fire simply because I use scribd for a lot of my reading and the paperwhite doesn’t support it.

@Cherron I’m so glad you said this! I use Scribd a lot as well and thats one reason I need a reading device

You’ll have to download the app straight from scribd, it isn’t in the kindle store, but it’s simple. They give you directions.

Paper white has the paper like read style, so the pages don’t have to be lit (there is a feature where you can light it if you’re in low light), but it’s better for your eyes NOT to read from a brightly lit tablet for long periods of time. For that reason I went with paper white-no eye fatigue, and I already get PLENTY of screen time
