Gillian flynn has good thriller mystery. Devils knot is a true story that is good and after he reads it he can research what happened to the “murderets”

If so, I’d hate to suggest this during these tough times but the Left Behind series by Tim Laheye and Jerry B. Jenkins.
He might like something like Starship Troopers.
My brothers (34) not a big reader but he likes stuff like the divergent series, the 5th wave, the gone series by Michael grant, and he also likes mystery fiction books like the friend request.
