I’m reading Eat, Pray, Love. Reviews?
So I’ve been reading Eat, Pray, Love (not as much as I’d like to because apparently my puppy thinks shes indestructible 2 days after getting spayed ?). Anyway, I was perusing the reviews on Goodreads and was not finding many positive reviews even though it has over 4 stars. I’m enjoying it, again just wish I jad the time to read it, but what are some of your thoughts about it? If you liked it, WHAT did you like about it? If you DIDN’T like it, what about it didn’t you like? I’m finishing up the Pray chapters so no worries about spoilers. Thanks!
I really enjoyed it (and the movie version). I found her experiences to be amusing and heartwarming and a kind of idealized escapism. I suppose it helped that I’ve been interested in food (collecting cookbooks), Buddhism and meditation, and Asian cultures for many years.
I personally just couldn’t get into it. I dont know what it was really just not my style I guess.
@Rachelle I’ve had that happen before. Particularly Sophie’s Choice by William Styron
@Jessica I’ve heard good things about that book also and same ?
@Rachelle oh let me tell you something. LOL. I’ve read war and peace. I’ve read wuthering heights and Beowulf dozens of times EACH. I’ve read almost all of Shakespeare’s works. (I was an english major ?) but it took me FOUR months to get less than half way through Sophie’s Choice and it ended up on the DNF pile for now. Good luck with that one lol
I agree. Nothing specific but just did not get into it.
LOVED IT!!! And the audio was even better!! The soccer game scene in Italy was HILARIOUS to listen to!!!
Ah, I watched the movie and liked it ok (other than, geez, must be nice to financially be able to take off a year and go find myself). But I found the book on sale and bought it a few years ago and have the same problem. It’s sat in my to-read pile for so long simply bc it never got that great of reviews.
She was too whiny and i just got tired of her
Hands down one of the worst books I have ever read. Did not bother to finish it after I got the gist.
I loved it. But I was at a point in my life when I needed to read a book like that.
Her narrative annoyed me at times. But she was lost and lost people are a mess. ?♀️
You know…I got a lot out of this book, despite some of the narrative being a little self-absorbed. I think it’s a brave thing to be THIS reflective when women are conditioned to be selfless to the point of martyrdom.
I just liked the way she wrote it. I loved her translation of the Italian guy screaming about the game (Eat). The part of the wedding and her letting go of her husband (Pray). And the word she came up with at the very end (Love).
I thought it was highly over-rated at the time.
I enjoyed it.
I liked parts of it but it’s been long enough that I don’t recall what I liked best. The parts I didn’t like made it a lesser book, overall, but I liked her writing enough to go on to read more by her.
I loved it and have read it several times ? As others state, maybe I needed this story at particular points in my life. It actually became one of the main sources of inspiration for my debut novel (The Cosmopolitan Islander) ? The film was okay, but not as good as the book (as is often the case) ? Happy reading!
