I’ve read East of Eden several times. I’m not a huge Steinbeck fan. I found it more relatable as an adult than when I studied Steinbeck’s works as a student and more enjoyable still when I read it while living in California not too far from its setting. I don’t care for Steinbeck’s portrayal of women in general.
Love the classics! My all time favorite is Count of Monte Cristo. It speaks to the basic human conditions- love, betrayal, anger, greed, jealousy, revenge, forgiveness. I used to stay up late into the night reading it when I was in H.S.
Count of Monte Cristo is the ONLY book I listen to vs reading. I listen while on the treadmill every morning. When the book is finished, I start over….learn something new every time!
Check out “Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters.” This is a diary Steinbeck wrote about writing the novel while working on it. Found it fascinating and it gives insight on the book as well as Steinbeck himself.
I have only read East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath once, but they are so memorable. I don’t re-read much, except for Thomas Hardy. Tess of the D’Urberevilles and Jude the Obscure are 3 reads each. Love those, and other Hardy novels like The Mayor of Casterbridge and Return of the Native.
For a long time classics were the only books I would read lol just recently started branching out more…Little Women and anything by Jane Austen is ??
Reading it for the first time
East of Eden is my favorite book. I went so far with Steinbeck that I visited the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas and took this picture of the box that East of Eden was delivered to his publisher in (Hebrew for timshel): https://www.flickr.com/photos/erocsid/27482677341/in/photolist-H4aH92-HSxVdp-HSxUuv
It’s my second favorite book I’ve ever read ❤️
What is the first?
@Gyöngyi Jane Eyre
These are my favourites too – among others. 🙂
One of my favorite books. I learned a lot about truth.
Loved that one!
I have a classics collection in my shelves… my favourite I’ve read is ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde.
Oh, haven’t read that one yet ?
Creepy! I was seriously reading between my fingers at one point!

I seldom reread books(so many unread books out in the wild!), but I’ve read Anna Karenina and Pride and Prejudice many times.

One hell of a writer. Steinbeck knows how to tell a story.

Love it. You should also read “Journal of a Novel” if you haven’t already – Steinbeck’s journal that he kept during the writing of Eden.
