I second Dragonlance. They are great to start with. If you want something newer Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is fantastic. The series isn’t finished but the first book can stand on its own.

Urban fantasy technically. I’d start beginners on the classics.

Richard

@Lewys yeah but they are fairly short with straight forward plots and a light hearted tone that isn’t difficult to get into.

Obsidian trilogy by Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory. It has dragons, elves, wizards, unicorns demons and a bunch of bad and mean creatures.

Do you like comics?
My fantasy comic series has at least 3 out of four of what you like.

John Gwynne’s faithful and fallen series, the first book is called Malice. Also Mitchell Hogans Shadow of the Exile. It has a badass demon and an awesome magic system.

I think the inheritance cycle is the best dragon series written

You must not have read many then. You can tell it was written by a teenager and most of his elements were just ripped off from other stories.

2
Richard

Try Anne McCafery or as mentioned above dragon lance.

Jesse

@Richard I’ve read plenty. I understand it doesnt appeal to some but I enjoy the series.

Jesse

Also you can argue most things post Tolkien are ripped off from other stories. There are a lot of original plots and themes that are exclusive to inheritance

@Jesse I loved the eragon series I can’t wait till he releases more in the series. Take a look at Naomi Novik her Majesty’s dragon it’s an interesting take of dragons used in warfare against napoleon.

1
Lucas

@Jesse Tolkien was certainly inspired, but the things he was drawing off of were folklore. He also invented a significant amount of things (including an entire, functional language with its own grammar and syntax). Paolini directly lifted elements of his story from contemporary art. At least, that’s the first book: Paolini did begin to wise up by book 2 and by the third book he really begins to come into his own as a writer.
