I’m looking for recommendations for my 8-year-old who reads middle-school age books.

I’m looking for recommendations for my 8-year-old who reads middle-school age books. She really loves science and math and I’d like to give her some books for Christmas that have strong female characters engaged in STEM related activities. Thanks! ?

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly. I think there is a sequel also.

My very first thought as well. The sequel is called, “The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate”.

I read everything Jonathan Maberry writes even his young adult books. He has a new series that starts with a book called Mars One. I don’t remember anything being in it that is objectionable for a middle schooler, maybe you can check it out.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22856166-headstrong is great – not a novel but more like mini bios of a whole bunch of women to go learn more about.

If you haven’t already, check out the recommendations for books on the site “A Mighty Girl”. Also a great resource for advice and STEM related educational toys, DVDs, etc.

My 8 year old is loving A Boy Called Bat right now – great story, plus wonderful insight into the challenges of others. And the Bunnicula series right now prepping for Halloween. Next up is the Spirit Animals series – they look fun, and include a role-paying game component.

It’s not a children’s series, but about a child: Allen Bradley’s stupendous Flavia de Luce mysteries. The first is The Sweetness at the Bottom of Pie. She’s a brilliant chemist.

Has she read A Wrinkle in Time? That’s a classic that never gets old. It’s a series as well.
