I’m looking for a really good King Arthur book that focuses on Arthur but has a lot of fantasy and magic in it. Any suggestions?

Love the warlord chronicles series! Cornwell as his very best.

These are brilliant and but have a realist feel with any magic being implied rather than explicit

The last sword of power by david gemmell is very loosely based on arthur but is mostly magical fantasy fun

It’s a short read but I loved The Song of Arthur by Robert Leeson. Rosemary Sutcliff’s King Arthur Trilogy is a great retelling. Women of Camelot is a beautiful book (maybe more for the artwork than the writing) and it’s nice to get some different perspectives on the legends

Just read the traitor son cycle by miles Cameron. Book one is the red knight. Its not king Arthur, but it’ll push all the buttons you are looking for.

Mary Stewart has a great Arthurian series, starting with The Crystal Cave. It focuses on Merlin, though, more than Arthur.

I see that alot of people suggest Mists of Avalon, and while I do think it’s a good book I feel I need to warn you that it does not focus on Arthur. I mean he’s in the book of course but the main protagonist is Morgan le Fey and the secondary is Guinnevere (can’t bloody spell that name). And while there is magic it’s of a sort of low key kind. That being said I do recommend it.

The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights by John Steinbeck is one I read and really enjoyed. It’s supposedly a faithful retelling of the oldest serious Arthur legend. Its one problem is that it’s unfinished. Steinbeck died before its completion, so this great book just suddenly stops, and we’ll never get the end as Steinbeck would have wrote it.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley is probably the best version of the Arthurian saga I have ever read. The story is told through the eyes of his sister Morgaine as Christianity begins to oust the indigenous Pagan beliefs. There is magic, emotion and everything else you could ever want from a book. I can’t praise this enough – I’ve read it several times and will read it again. I have to say that this book also made me realise that there is an element of Pagan blood running through my veins. I first read it back in the eighties and it still resonates with me. Stunning….. Just buy it!!!
