Tuckwell Kane Op was asking series with hints. ?

MichaelQuestion author

I read all the broken empire and Shannara

1
Lucas

Not really. To be fair references of the Pope and Rome litter the book; you’re only not positive because Lawrence is so bad at world building in those books..

0
Katri

@Lucas Well, all the post apocalyptic books, comics and movies kind of suck in world building. ?

@Roger, have you read it? There’s a whole multitude of real world references.

@Craig
I read the first one but thought it sucked. Just surprised that I hadn’t heard that before…

Jordan was writing a mono myth, something that was influenced by dozens of nationalities, cultures, and religions. Some fun ones…

“Did Mosk and Merk really fight with spears of fire, and were they even giants?” (Chapter 20, Winds Rising) – References Moscow and America’s Cold War tensions.

“Tell us about Lenn,” Egwene called. “How he flew to the moon in the belly of an eagle made of fire. Tell about his daughter Salya walking among the stars.” (Chapter 4, The Eye of the World) – Referencing astronauts John Glenn and Sally Ride

“A silvery thing in another cabinet, like a three-pointed star inside a circle, was made of no substance she knew; it was softer than metal, scratched and gouged, yet even older than any of the ancient bones. From ten paces she could sense pride and vanity.” (Chapter 11, The Shadow Rising) – A Mercedes Benz hood ornament

“Materese the Healer” – Mother Theresa

“Elsbet, Queen of all.” – Queen Elizabeth

Then you have the names:

Shai’tan = Satan
Egwene al’Vere = Guinevere
Galad = Galahad
Tar Valon = Avalon
Thom Merrilin = Merlin

Etc.

@Craig wow i never knew

It really goes beyond that, with the explicitly described prior civilization that was higher tech (whether or not that tech was magic, who knows) and the implication that it wasn’t the first prior civilization in a number of points in the series

0
Craig

They cover that in basically the first paragraph in the series. ?

How about the sister of the dead series by barb and jc hendee? I’ve been through the first series and started the second several years ago. There are a few clues in there, but nothing definitive as far as I’ve been.

Broken Empire is set after an event known as the Day of a Thousand Sun which sounds very much like a nuclear holocaust. The Left Hand of God trilogy is set after a second ice age. Waylander II hints that Gemmell’s Drenai saga is set after the collapse of an advanced civilization

Joe Abercrombie’s Half a King, Half the World, and Half a War are set thousands of years after “elves” shattered god. I won’t go further but spoiler: probably not elves.

I may be wrong, but it felt like Peter V Brett’s Demon Cycle fits here. There were definite hints along the way…but then again I gave up before I finished the final book.

MichaelQuestion author

@Tidalick really? I read all of but I read all of them i missed the hints

1
Tidalick

@Michael hints of a previous civilisation who had advanced scientific knowledge, ruins made of metal, energy sources etc – again, I gave up on the fifth book so could be totally wrong.

2
MichaelQuestion author

@Tidalick yea i pushed through because i like the first 3 so much but i feel you
