I have glasses but the cause is not books but computers. When reading I dont need glasses yet. But someday i will, in very near future. I love reading with lights switched off and the only source of light is my phone’s torch light. I can read for long hours like this.
I do. I got them when I was a teenager, but only needed them when I did a lot of reading & my eyes got tired. Now at 52 I can’t read a thing without them?
ME. Both my parents have glasses so it must be in the genes, but I doubt it would have worsened to this extent if it wasn’t for my precious books. (No regrets, though!) ?
Everyone thinks I have glasses because I read a lot .. well they’re wrong. Ì hv a condition where I can’t see far away things. I have a cylindrical problem.
Confusing comments. You don’t read hard copies but find the screen light maddening? The device’s brightness can be adjusted. Either way, I’ve never heard or reading causing vision issues–eye strain, yes. I’ve an appt with my ophthalmologist Monday–will try to remember to ask.
Nice to hear comments here! I didn’t know reading cannot cause someone needing glasses. I’ll definitely ask my optometrist about that. I remember her telling me that when you read and focus your eyes at something near all the time, you develop myopia
Except for the changes that occur with aging which affects our ability to clearly read small print, people need glasses because of the shape and/or musculature of their eyes.
I don’t have glasses because of reading…I just have always had poor eyes. Almost blind in my right eye. But, thank God for glasses. I’d not be able to read at all without them.
I’ve had glasses since the 3rd grade, but they’re for far away. Lately I’ve been switching them out for reading glasses to see closer. The joys of getting older! ?
I don’t know if it from reading or just because I am older (62) or because of the thread crocheting I do, but I have been wearing them for years. Figure it is just a fact of life and keep on going.
Same here, but it’s got nothing to do with reading, contrary to Mom’s insistence that it does. I’ve had three optometrists say reading (even in bad light) has nothing to do with your eyesight. “You just inherited bad eyes” is what they’ve all said.” Thanks, Unknown Ancestor!
Yup, originally, at least in part. Yeah, I started needing them when I was around 8 or 9, “to see the blackboard.” And then I realized I needed them outside too. Always nearsighted, but it’s actually physically: eyeballs too long, so focus in front of retina. Over the years eyes got worse and worse. Then about 9 years ago I had cataract surgery, because cataracts were added to my myopia. My doctor gave me new lenses with distance vision, so now I wear glasses (very thing lenses this time!) for closeup viewing. Had to work to break long habit of taking glasses off to see close up—that doesn’t work anymore!
I’m short sighted and wear glasses all the time, but now I need glasses for reading. I was going to get varifocals but they wouldn’t have come before my holiday, so I have a separate pair that I’m forever losing*.
*Pushing up into my hair and forgetting about them.
My eye doctor said it’s a myth that you can hurt your eyes by reading too much or reading in dim light. I have glasses because as I got older I found I needed them.
I’m looking through them right now. But my father bequeathed me the gift of terrible eyesight, so now I have to use reading glasses on top of contact lenses. That’s all right–whatever it takes to read.
Meeeee
Dont have any YET!! But I know I will be needing some soon according to my last check up with eye specialist..:(
I’m due for a check up because my eyes are irritating while reading. Its has been a year since I went to my optometrist
@Yves, yea I used to be able to read not too far away from my eyes but lately I seem to be having to distance it. Otherwise it is rather blurry..:(
I’ll be in this category soon.
I have glasses but the cause is not books but computers. When reading I dont need glasses yet. But someday i will, in very near future. I love reading with lights switched off and the only source of light is my phone’s torch light. I can read for long hours like this.
Me
?
Too many nights as a kid staying up past bed time reading with insufficient light.
Me, and distance glasses as well
I do. I got them when I was a teenager, but only needed them when I did a lot of reading & my eyes got tired. Now at 52 I can’t read a thing without them?
I wear glasses but I don’t really think reading caused it….
Yep, 42 and I have bifocal glasses and mono vision for contacts oh and readers
I call it getting old
Sounds like me Donna ?
Reading doesn’t cause you to need glasses!
Me bifocals that are progressive.
me bc I could not bring myself to stop reading even if in dim lights when I was younger..
ME. Both my parents have glasses so it must be in the genes, but I doubt it would have worsened to this extent if it wasn’t for my precious books. (No regrets, though!) ?
Reading and computers are not the cause for you needing glasses. You need them because of age, as the eye gets older they are less able to focus
Me ??
Yup
Since age 6
Me!!! Glasses, contacts, readers ?
Me
yep….i now have coke bottles for glasses…
I actually have to take mine off to read, I see fine up close ,my glasses throw off the perception of the words
meeeee
Me
Reading+ working in front of the pc= glasses
Heyyyyyy i got recently
I started reading in 2nd grade. Had my glasses on the 4th grade because of it.
Me I have to wear them all the time coz I read too much in poor light when I was younger
Me
I have mine for reading and when I’m on my phone and laptop
Me ?
I have reading glasses.

Yes l do but not from readingl have inherited an eye disease from my mum
Sadly me!
I’m 46 have read heavily since I was 4/5 years old and still don’t need reading glasses! ? My Opthamologist is shocked!
mrrrrr
Me?
Meeeeeehhhhhhh
Guilty
Yes.
At least they suit you @Wayne. I dread having to eventually find ones Im going to be happy with.
Thanks Denise but I have always been after Lennon granny glasses
here
Yes, but I never put it down to reading a lot, it’s just one of those things.
Mine is because of an eye disease which started when I was a kid that was totally unrelated to reading…
meee
I’ve worn glasses since I started school so no I don’t think it’s anything to do with reading. | just have bad eyesight.
My doc said it has nothing to do with reading a lot they would have gone bad anyway ..got my glasses 3 months ago
Have been wearing glasses since I was 4 and am.now 59. Don’t think there is any connection with reading
I’ve got seeing glasses.
Everyone thinks I have glasses because I read a lot .. well they’re wrong. Ì hv a condition where I can’t see far away things. I have a cylindrical problem.
Me
Hmm me… My grade is 250 both. Reading is life!
Really? Reading causes vision issues? Sounds like an old wives tale.
Confusing comments. You don’t read hard copies but find the screen light maddening? The device’s brightness can be adjusted. Either way, I’ve never heard or reading causing vision issues–eye strain, yes. I’ve an appt with my ophthalmologist Monday–will try to remember to ask.
????
I’ve had glasses since 1st grade. I can’t blame it on reading. If it wasn’t for ultra light lenses mine would be coke bottles.
My husband is an optical dispenser and said that reading doesn’t cause loss of vision , look up presbyopia
Nice to hear comments here! I didn’t know reading cannot cause someone needing glasses. I’ll definitely ask my optometrist about that. I remember her telling me that when you read and focus your eyes at something near all the time, you develop myopia
That makes no sense, either. Who spends all their time looking at things at the end of their nose?
My eyesight just sucks. It had nothing to do with reading.
Meeeeeeee…and that too very badly
I have glasses since I was 7, nothing to do with reading!?
I’ve had glasses for 60 years. I don’t buy for a moment the idea that reading made my eyes worse.
I have contacts. Wore glasses since 7. But i don’t think its bc of reading. I almost always take my glasses off to read.
20/20 vision, and been reading since I was 5..
I’ve had reading glasses for a couple years now.
Meeee! Both from reading and gaming lol
I have them since 2 years old…. So… Maybe my glasses are not about reading
Sure do
I had since I was 14. I used to read in dim light. Just got my LASIK done. ?
Mee
Except for the changes that occur with aging which affects our ability to clearly read small print,
people need glasses because of the shape and/or musculature of their eyes.
Me!!!
Not because of reading because of age.
Ditto ?
Reading causes vision issues ?
Its like air causes lung infection to me !
It started with glasses for reading, now I need them for everything
Me
I don’t have glasses because of reading…I just have always had poor eyes. Almost blind in my right eye. But, thank God for glasses. I’d not be able to read at all without them.
I’ve had glasses since the 3rd grade, but they’re for far away. Lately I’ve been switching them out for reading glasses to see closer. The joys of getting older! ?
Yes. I consider it a sports related injury

I’ve had glasses since I’m 7. I’m turning 14 this year and have only been an avid reader since last year. It runs in the family…
I’ve had glasses since I was 12. I’m 19 now. But I’m pretty sure blindness just runs in the family lol
I don’t know if it from reading or just because I am older (62) or because of the thread crocheting I do, but I have been wearing them for years. Figure it is just a fact of life and keep on going.
I am not sure if this is because of reading alone! But I can proudly admit that the reading deserves some credit to provide some fashionable glasses.
I wear glasses for eyesight.
I am near sighted. I like that I can read with and without my glasses.
yes.
ME?
Me
I have glasses but I this it’s because I spend a lot of time on the phone screen with the light’s off?
I wear them cos I am short sighted.
Me.
I wear them because I’m extremely nearsighted & have astigmatism.
Same as Lisa. Have needed glasses since age 12.
Yup, originally, at least in part. Yeah, I started needing them when I was around 8 or 9, “to see the blackboard.” And then I realized I needed them outside too. I need glasses to read, it started about 3 years ago, never had to use it but yes, it’s from reading and working on a computer every day.
Me!
I’ve worn glasses since third grade!
I’ve worn them since first grade- probably needed them sooner, but didn’t go to kindergarten.
I’m short sighted and wear glasses all the time, but now I need glasses for reading. I was going to get varifocals but they wouldn’t have come before my holiday, so I have a separate pair that I’m forever losing*.
*Pushing up into my hair and forgetting about them.
I ruined these eyes reading.
When I went back to get my BA in English in college when I was 33, my eyes went nuts. Have needed glasses to read ever since!
nah, I have glasses for far away.
me,,started@21,, now im 29,…not just because of reading,,all of it,,lifestyle..+ reading
My eye doctor said it’s a myth that you can hurt your eyes by reading too much or reading in dim light. I have glasses because as I got older I found I needed them.
I’m sure reading by nightlight for a few years contributed to my coke-bottle lenses ?
I do! I just had my cataracts fixed so I just need glasses for reading now.
Me
????
lol I’m working on it ???
Josie~~Um, I have blurred vision but I love to read.
Me lol. Though my job is a big part of it
Yep
I have glasses but not because of reading. I have glasses because I’m blind as a bat ! ?
Yep
Meee and I’m blind without them
Nope
I’ve had glasses since before i could read.
lol. I take mine off to read
(and thread a needle n sew etc)
No..no glasses. And i read since i was 7… i read 3-4 books a wk..
Tips:
After a few minutes reading… look/stare at something in distance
Tips2: in the morning…stare/look at green…green grass…green field etc..for a few minutes…
Thanks for the tips
What does looking at green do?
More like I read because I have glasses… Blinder than a bat without em
I wear glasses all the time not just for reading lol
At age 40 needed glasses, but I still read large print books only, much easier for me. I get all books from the Library
I’m in the same boat. I just bought a kindle and being able to increase the font size is awesome
Haven’t tried kindle yet
hmm chicken or the egg dilemma.
My glasses are so I can read !!!
??????
I do, but if the book is really good and can’t stop reading it, I usually just pick it up without my glasses on.
I have glasses because I’m blind. Does that count?
Same
Reading and staring at my mobile phone screen!
Yes
Me
+1
I’ve had bad reading habits for years, so that might be why I’m a little near-sighted now.
Me but i have worn glasses since i was small. I dont really need to read with the glasses on. I have a lazy eye thats part of the reason i have specs.
Me
I’m looking through them right now. But my father bequeathed me the gift of terrible eyesight, so now I have to use reading glasses on top of contact lenses. That’s all right–whatever it takes to read.
