I’m due for a check up because my eyes are irritating while reading. Its has been a year since I went to my optometrist
@Yves, yea I used to be able to read not too far away from my eyes but lately I seem to be having to distance it. Otherwise it is rather blurry..:(

I have glasses but the cause is not books but computers. When reading I dont need glasses yet. But someday i will, in very near future. I love reading with lights switched off and the only source of light is my phone’s torch light. I can read for long hours like this.

I do. I got them when I was a teenager, but only needed them when I did a lot of reading & my eyes got tired. Now at 52 I can’t read a thing without them?
I wear glasses but I don’t really think reading caused it….

ME. Both my parents have glasses so it must be in the genes, but I doubt it would have worsened to this extent if it wasn’t for my precious books. (No regrets, though!) ?
Reading and computers are not the cause for you needing glasses. You need them because of age, as the eye gets older they are less able to focus

Mine is because of an eye disease which started when I was a kid that was totally unrelated to reading…

My doc said it has nothing to do with reading a lot they would have gone bad anyway ..got my glasses 3 months ago

Confusing comments. You don’t read hard copies but find the screen light maddening? The device’s brightness can be adjusted. Either way, I’ve never heard or reading causing vision issues–eye strain, yes. I’ve an appt with my ophthalmologist Monday–will try to remember to ask.

I’ve had glasses since 1st grade. I can’t blame it on reading. If it wasn’t for ultra light lenses mine would be coke bottles.
My husband is an optical dispenser and said that reading doesn’t cause loss of vision , look up presbyopia
Nice to hear comments here! I didn’t know reading cannot cause someone needing glasses. I’ll definitely ask my optometrist about that. I remember her telling me that when you read and focus your eyes at something near all the time, you develop myopia
That makes no sense, either. Who spends all their time looking at things at the end of their nose?

I’ve had glasses for 60 years. I don’t buy for a moment the idea that reading made my eyes worse.
I have contacts. Wore glasses since 7. But i don’t think its bc of reading. I almost always take my glasses off to read.

I don’t know if it from reading or just because I am older (62) or because of the thread crocheting I do, but I have been wearing them for years. Figure it is just a fact of life and keep on going.
I am not sure if this is because of reading alone! But I can proudly admit that the reading deserves some credit to provide some fashionable glasses.

Same here, but it’s got nothing to do with reading, contrary to Mom’s insistence that it does. I’ve had three optometrists say reading (even in bad light) has nothing to do with your eyesight. “You just inherited bad eyes” is what they’ve all said.” Thanks, Unknown Ancestor!

Yup, originally, at least in part. Yeah, I started needing them when I was around 8 or 9, “to see the blackboard.” And then I realized I needed them outside too. Always nearsighted, but it’s actually physically: eyeballs too long, so focus in front of retina. Over the years eyes got worse and worse. Then about 9 years ago I had cataract surgery, because cataracts were added to my myopia. My doctor gave me new lenses with distance vision, so now I wear glasses (very thing lenses this time!) for closeup viewing. Had to work to break long habit of taking glasses off to see close up—that doesn’t work anymore!
I need glasses to read, it started about 3 years ago, never had to use it but yes, it’s from reading and working on a computer every day.

I’m short sighted and wear glasses all the time, but now I need glasses for reading. I was going to get varifocals but they wouldn’t have come before my holiday, so I have a separate pair that I’m forever losing*.

My eye doctor said it’s a myth that you can hurt your eyes by reading too much or reading in dim light. I have glasses because as I got older I found I needed them.

At age 40 needed glasses, but I still read large print books only, much easier for me. I get all books from the Library

I’m looking through them right now. But my father bequeathed me the gift of terrible eyesight, so now I have to use reading glasses on top of contact lenses. That’s all right–whatever it takes to read.
