I’m going to try to start reading some classics soon. I’ve tried before but I can never stay interested in them. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yess I’m doing the same. What did you try reading? I tried a few years back but something about the writing style and dialog I just couldn’t get into. I finished The Great Gatsby about a month ago though and fell in love. Next in line is Wuthering Heights.
I think the writing style & dialogue is what throws me off and makes me uninterested too. I’ve tried reading Wuthering Heights twice. I’ve had so many people say that it’s amazing, and I can never get into it. I picked up a copy of The Great Gatsby today actually. That’s what has got me wanting to read some classics again.
@Kristy Wuthering Heights is definitely one of the most touching stories I’ve read. It has many subplots and events with different generations, but they’re all related to one another. Try reading it again and see the beauty of it (with a broken heart?)
I’m definitely going to try! Thank you!
The pacing is just a lot different. Current books are written to compete with our tv/internet wired brains. It’s doable. You just have to find an author that speaks to you and relax and enjoy the story unfolding.
Relaxing is a must!
I’m thinking it would be best to read these when I’m home alone or complete silence that way I can concentrate more lol. Hopefully that works.
I have to 100% focus when I’m reading classics otherwise I may miss something and get confused but I feel like a lot of them are worth it once you get into it. I love Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Great Gatsby, And Rebecca
I’m probably just going to have to focus more probably. I get like two pages into a classic and I get confused by the dialogue then I get aggravated and end up putting it down.
@Kristy There have been a few classics that I just couldn’t get into so I definitely understand. It’s a change of pace reading wise because it’s not just a regular everyday easy read.
Try YA classics! Shorter and fun! Anne of Green Gables, Little House, Narnia….
This is definitely a good suggestion!
Definitely something I will be trying. Thanks!
I LOVE “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Tale of Troy.” They’re both GREAT books and are Puffin Classics.
I only recently read Alice in Wonderland ?? I loved it! Its so crazy!
I personally found Pride & Prejudice to be easy reading for me—but I’ve always loved the story and knew it before going into it, so that helped. The Hobbit is another easy read, as well as the Scarlet Pimpernel. It does take some getting used to, kind of like starting a new genre
i did but just went for it and now im obsessed!!! i don’t know why i didn’t read them earlier and i chastise myself for that.
my favorites are definitely wuthering heights and pride and prejudice

Funny that East of Eden is #1 ???
One of my favorites, but I’d expect it to bore a lot of people. I like slow books!
Depending on the book. Love Jane Eyre, love “Three men in a boat”, enjoyed “Crime and Punishment” I guess it depends. Just try some new titles and see if you’ll like it
I’m exactly the opposite..I almost only read classics, having actually difficulty with modern novels as the latter usually has such weak use of language, and plots that are quite predictable or dull. I never found someone with the same interest as mine?
I love classics too! Those were the first books my father brought me, so I got used to the language in those books. It also fascinates to read books from Victorian era. I do read modern novels but I always keep going back to classics. You are not alone!
@T ah you make me so happy! I absolutely love books from the Victorian era ❤️ of course I do read modern novels every now and then, but classics will always be my favorites that could not be replaced.
@Hibbe who is your favorite author?
I don’t really have one favorite author. I do love Jane Austin, Dostoevsky, and George Orwell☺️ How about you @T?
Charlotte Bronte is my favorite.
@T she’s a great writer! I love Emily Bronte more though❤️
I love reading classics, and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books ever! I even loved The Scarlet Letter when we had to read it in high school (although the project our English teacher assigned was a nightmare). I find it super helpful to “set the mood” when I’m reading a classic: put on comfy pjs, play some instrumental music (the movie scores for most classic literature adaptations are great for this), and make a cup of hot tea. I’ll also light a nice scented candle sometimes, and it makes reading classics fun and relaxing!
Flowers for Algernon!!!
I read the short version before in school
I have tried reading classics but always seem to get distracted by books that are faster paced and have more action. Eventually it gets put off for so long that I give up. I’ve tried reading Pride and Prejudice and Withering Heights. I didn’t read them last time but I’ll probably try reading them again soon. Currently I’m reading Fahrenheit 451, and it’s going well!
