They normally think books are boring

Nothing? I’ve never encountered anyone who had anything to say.
My husband, who hasn’t read a book since high school will ask me if I’m enjoying it. Will console me when I cry for the loss of fictional characters but that’s it.

@Emma, lucky! My husband hates books and doesn’t understand why I read.

I’m super duper lucky.
I’m sure your husband has a thing he loves to do but you don’t enjoy.
Bryce loves fishing, I think fishing is equal parts, boring, gross and smelly.
He comes home and I don’t say “how was your boring smelly fish adventure?” I asked if he caught anything, and then I listen while he regales me with exaggerated tales of giant fish and huge swells.
And I try to add the appropriate ohhhs and ahhhs because it’s what he loves.
B has zero interest in books but he ohhhs and ahhhs at the right moments for me too.
Mutual feigning of interest is what makes a happy marriage. Lol.

@Emma hahahaha my husband also loves fishing and I find it extremely boring.
He definitely let’s me feed my addiction, I spend an insane amount on books a month and I never say a word on how much all his reels and bait cost.
As for hearing about my books he just makes fun of them (I am in to fantasy books, so I get some are pretty out there)

When it comes up and I tell people I read 3-5 books per week non-readers look at me in disbelief and say something along the lines of “I don’t know how you do it” or “Wow” one person even said “I don’t know how, you must not have much of a social life”

Emma

@Renee you should reply “Well I like books more than I like people.” And then pointedly look them up and down.

Let your book nerd shine!

1

I actually do like books more than I like people (in general.) Lol.

1

Mostly they just ask why. I say same reason most people watch TV or play video games or crochet. Its entertaining to me.

Why do you read? It’s boring, waste of time and money, How do you read so quickly? Watching the show/movie is easier.

@Nana Thanks for starting this topic. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one dealing with this. ?

1
NanaQuestion author

“You must be like, super smart.” I am, but it’s not just because I’m a bibliophile. I can read War and Peace out of enjoyment and not out of trying to look like a Poindexter, or is that not a thing in the non-reader’s universe?

My mom always says “wish I had time to read” and both my sisters always love to call me a nerd ?? The only time anyone has said anything in public was when I was sitting in Starbucks and an older woman told me she never sees people my age reading just on their phones.

Nothing, because people that know me personally, know I’ll speak my mind… when that happens, people’s feelings get hurt(not mine).

Nothing, really that I can think of. I was lucky enough to grow up with really supportive parents when it came to reading (we were lucky to get a new toy, but if we wanted a new book, it was rare to hear “No.”) and it seemed like reading was super prevalent at my school. Because of that, the people who didn’t like reading much really didn’t say much about it, other than in good natured jest.

Now that I’m really thinking about it, it’s honestly ever been just one co-worker, but she grew up in an atmosphere almost the opposite of mine. Reading was discouraged. A tragedy really.

They usually like to say I’m smart (I’m not saying that i deny it lol, but you don’t need to be smart or even a particularly good reader to enjoy reading yknow)

Jus today a fellow mom at church crinkled her nose and said “when do you find the time”? I want to be like…”you can do anything if you make the time”…I work full time and have three little kids. My kids see me reading all the time and I read to them all the time. It’s one of the greatest gifts I can give them!

I seem to strike a lot of people who just say “I don’t read”, like they are superior because of this fact. So weird!

Growing up my mom used to say things like “don’t u wanna go outside and play for a while” now that I’m an adult it’s more along the lines of “how many books did u read this week” ?

@Karina that’s what I’m saying…

My landlord wants me to get rid of my books cos they think they are a fire hazard. They asked if it’d be hard for me getting of them. I told them I’m not getting rid of them.

I am an introvert with social anxiety and when I explained my books are like my friends and it triggers my anxiety to think of having to get rid of them they told me I should get counselling to determine why I feel that way about my books. I thought that was rude.

4
Reply
NanaQuestion author

@Karina That was very rude ? i don’t think your books will be a problem at all lol

I don’t understand why people get so uncomfortable with people reading and collecting books, it’s just like any other hobby ? what’s the problem? you are not bothering or hurting anyone lol

I’m also an introvert and have social anxiety ? reading makes me feel good,it makes me happy, i can live different adventures and they are like my friends ? i just wish people could have more respect, it’s not fair

1
Keava

@Nana exactly. I mean ppl buy DVDs and sometimes only watch the movie once but they dont throw it out afterwards. I like to keep my books. I’m a book collector. That gets on my nerves so much

Actually not a lot. Often in a discussion I will have facts that no one has heard. When that happens a few times, people want to know where to find the information.
