Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. The Red Pony (novella) by Steinbeck. Many series where a favorite character dies (Anne of Green Gables, Harry Potter, Tales of the City series by Armisted Maupin). Seems that YA fiction makes me cry more than others. Maybe because I have so many memories associated with them from when I was younger (I’m 40 now)

My 6th grade teacher read to us for a half hour every day after lunch. When she selected this book and got to the end she had to ask someone to take over because she couldn’t stop crying. I think that there were only a few of us in the room who weren’t crying, boys and girls.

Me too! I was expecting a different ending the entire time I was reading it, I really didn’t think it was going to end the way it did ?

1
Kate

@Miral, I’m right there with you. I thought that it was going to be the “they all live happily ever after” ending.

1
June

I thought that too until i new the second book was called after you ?

1
Miral

@Kate, I know right! The book started off light and funny, which is what made me think it was going to stay that way till its end. The fact that the ending was so unexpected is what made it even more heartbreaking in my opinion ?
@June, Yeah the title of the second book is a huge spoiler ? Not a very wise decision on the author’s part if you ask me xD

The last five books I’ve read have been no fun at all. How frustrating. I”m not hard to please – just need a book that will keep my interest. My brainstorm for avoiding the frustration – head to the bookshelf that belongs to Jodi Picoult. I’ve read them all, kept them all, loved them all. I’m on page 10 of one selected at random and I’m hooked. This is what I need. Must remember to do this in the future when I hit a bad patch of reading.?

Funny story: The Pearl by John Steinbeck. I was reading it in senior French class and at the end when the young diver dies, I burst into tears, sobbing as everybody, including the teacher, stared at me in disbelief. At the time I sat in the back row but I was moved to the front after that so Monsieur Instructor could keep an eye on me.
