Good story, but I didn’t care for the authors style of writing.

Good story, but the author didn’t do it justice, nor did she include a list of references (which made me really stabby ).

Will finish listening to it this week, probably on Tuesday. Heartbreaking story, but so well written! The BITNB PGH Meet-Up is reading it for our April book discussion. If you’re in or near Pittsburgh come join us, Wednesday, April 10th 6:30pm to dine, then discussion and book chat 7:00-9:00pm. Meeting Room at Panera at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon.

I liked it but as I told someone, ‘I liked it enough to finish it but not enough to recommend it’…. the author’s style of writing is very choppy and there were parts i had to go back and say ‘wait, what did I miss?’

I thought it was poorly written and didn’t finish. Lilac Girls was wonderful, if you haven’t read that and are interested in WWII fiction.

Jill Schneider Wilger I was meh about Lilac Girls. Thank goodness books are a matter of opinion! 🙂 The Nightingale is another one of my favorite historical fiction novels…and a must read.

I thought it was a good book and even though some say there are historical inaccuracies, it seems to have a parallel story line to others I’ve read. You’d have to make your own judgment afterwards.

Listening to this right now. Every time I read a Holocaust novel, I get so angry that this was a real thing that happened to people. #NeverAgain

Kristin, same here. Maybe if it was classified as a memoir instead of historic fiction? I can’t quite pinpoint what I don’t like about it.

Jenn

@Kristin ditto. She’s a screenplay writer and it showed.

Yes, it’s worth it!! The writing was simple & lacked depth, but it was a beautiful story about love and triumph in the midst of tragedy. I found the afterward by Lale & Gita’s son very moving. I read it quickly in one 3 hour sitting…

Very superficial compared to many other accounts of life in a concentration camp. It’s a nice read, but I would look to other books to give you the reality.

A better romance, written by survivor with more realistic details is, for one, “I will Plant you a Lilac Tree.”
