I’m about halfway finished with Glass Castle and I CAN NOT BELIEVE that these children lived this way for so long. Unbelievable.

Yea it’s crazy
I teach high school special ed and the stories I have heard from children about their home lives just makes me shiver sometimes. I of course call child protective services… sometimes they can do something but most times the parents just move to another area 🙁
I saw an interview once with the author and the mother (who’s completely lost her mind at this point). It was so surprising to me because the author said one of the weirdest things about the book becoming so popular was how angry people were at her parents. She knew it was a bad childhood, but I guess she didn’t really understand how bad it was until she saw other people’s reactions.
This is exactly why I hated the book. I cannot stomach movies with rape scenes. Likewise, I cannot stomach books with SUCH neglectful parenting. I am frustrated and hung up on the neglectfulness. The Color of Water was just as difficult for me to stick with as The Glass Castle.
Yes, I understand I am being short-sighted! See how these children (and James McBride of The Color of Water) were able to succeed when faced with such an upbringing? That’s super for them. Their successes are cause for celebration; I just don’t want to read it.
Each to his own honey. You don’t have to read it! It WAS hard to read.
You need to read Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls . its about Rosemary, her mother, father and grandma.. I couldn’t believe how she was raised….
I was amazed that the dad was so intelligent yet couldn’t hold a job. Also that the mom even though she was a teacher wouldn’t send her kids to school.
It pissed me off every time her mother said “It’s time I did something for me”!
I think the chocolate part made me the most angry.
@Elizabeth yes!
I’m done! Now I’m going to watch the movie.
Read it, met the author, could not believe she did not hate her parents for the way those kids were treated.
but, then again I think that is why they did so much better for themselves.
Is it really that bad?? Ive only seen half the movie. The parts i saw honestly wasnt that bad.
I loved the book. It was sad, but beautiful and fascinating. I haven’t seen the movie yet.
The movie was totally watered down and didn’t portray her parents the way they really were.
that is what I thought too, not that I had seen the movie, just clips, that their father had a job. Actually, it was the mother that worked, the father was a drunk. Sorry, spoilers.
I haven’t reading it. Is it a depressing one?
Not really depressing, no. And a good ending.
Thank you!
I felt like it did a good job of showing how children love their parents despite their distinction. I found it interesting how she slowly figured it out but still loved her dad blindly.
I know. I read that book years ago when it first came out. I think most of the time I was reading, I was furious.
