If you’ve read the book, do you watch the movie after? The last time I did that, it kinda ruined it for me.

I can enjoy the book if I see the movie first. If I read the book first, the movie never measures up.

What book/movie was this?

Usually if there is a movie that looks good and I know it’s also a book, I want to read the book first. The movie doesn’t ruin it for me after I’ve read the book, but it does ruin the book experience a bit if I watch the movie first.

I find the book is almost always better than the movie but I still try and see the movie anyway!

Usually if a movie comes out based on a book, chances are I’ve already read it. The movie never measures up. If I see a series or movie that looks good and I haven’t already read the source material, I’ll wait to read until after I watched because then I’ll be able to enjoy it more. I prefer to read first though, and the book is always best. I’ll still watch the movie, but it’s never as good and sometimes only serves to aggravate.

If I had watched Eat Pray Love before I read the book, I never would have read the book. Horrible movie. Fantastic book

As a general rule, I always read the book before I watch the movie, if I know there is a book out there. I go into it knowing the book is always better, therefore I’m rarely disappointed

I should also add this is incredibly annoying to my husband, who doesn’t read at all, because I’m constantly saying “that’s not actually what happened” ???

Thanks for the comment. I just picked up Eat Pray Love at a thrift store. I heard the movie was bad and almost left the book on the shelf.

Lol yeah the movie was so awful! I absolutely loved the book though!

Movie first book after. Because if I do it the other way around I’m usually disappointed with a few exceptions.

I always have to read the book before watching the movie. If I watch the movie before I realize there is a book I usually won’t bother with reading it.

I have paranoia about watching the movie at all. I’m afraid I’ll never get the actors out of my head when I think of the book. It’s a shame, because I would actually like to watch some movie versions of my favorites, but I just can’t risk it.

I usually read the book first. Every once in awhile a movie will be better than the book imo, the Prince of Tides – the book irritated me to no end. And I’m from coastal Carolina. Couldn’t get through Pat Conroy books, although there are a few I haven’t tried and someday will.

For me I watch/read whatever comes first for me. So if I have the opportunity to watch the movie I watch it. Who would I be if I would say: no I have not yet read the book please put a different film in ? that would ruin it for everyone else

Either book or movie. Never both

Always book, then movie. I’m always aware of what they left out of the book when making the movie (that’s inevitable, of course) but if done right it doesn’t matter. I thought the movie “Brooklyn” was an excellent adaptation of a book I loved.

Read Red Sparrow. Book great, movie not so much. But still interesting! I do see movie after reading book. Sometimes it’s a good thing.

I read Sarah’s Key after seeing the movie, hoping it would answer some questions. It didn’t, but that book is one of my absolute favorites of all time. Martian was the same for me as far as reading after seeing and liking the book better. I find that movies always disappoint if I’ve read the book first, but rarely am I disappointed in a book I read after I’ve seen the movie.

Book has to be first for me. If I already know how it comes out, why bother to read it. Movies do their own thing anyway, not always accurate.

Both. I am a high school librarian and I want to be able to discuss both with my students. I have yet to tell them that the movie was better!

Sometimes. It depends on how much I like whichever I do first. Some movies I don’t even know are books until after I see the movie.

Never one right after the other. If I read the book I wait at least a month or two before watching the movie and vise versa.

Movie first. Then book. Book always has more details and I can visualize the characters in the movie while reading the book.

Book first, always..
usually only watch the movie if I am going to discuss it with ya or adult book groups.. I have historically grumbled, ranted of the unlikelihood of many movie goers, watchers to ever read the book is all too slim..

The movie version is always a huge disappointment to me. I dislike the person playing the lead, and it bugs me when they don’t follow the book and do their own thing.

I always read the book first because I can play a movie in my head about how i feel it should look. If I watch the.movie first then read it all I can picture is the movie. Boy do I get mad when they skip big parts or cast the role wrong lol

Sometimes. My visual imagination isn’t very detailed. LOTR is my very favorite book. I enjoyed the art direction & costumes in the films. And the music. Etc.
I reread my favorites, so nothing gets ruined.

The Book Thief, and the movie wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be probably because of the actors. But yes, they changed many things in the movie. Now I’m planning to watch some of John Grisham ‘s books based movies right after I finish reading the books of course. Most of them are award nominated so I’m hoping I won’t be disappointed ?

With the Harry Potter films I couldn’t wait to see them. With the first two it was as magical as the books. But number three was ruined for me. Also with parts five and six I missed a lot of the information that was in the books. I was really happy that they shot part 7 in two films, and then was disappointed all over again they didn’t shoot five and six in two films.
