Alyson

No, but I would then go back to book number one and read the series in order including the one I had already read x

@Alyson yes that’s what I’ve done in the past , though not re read a book yet .

Alyson

Yes, for me it’s all a bit “time permitting”! Takes a while to actually get as far as the book I’ve already read, especially if it’s something like book 12!! x

I always like to read the 1st in a series then if I miss any over the years I don’t mind. I like to see how a series starts and the history of the character. My aim in life is to get the way book of a series signed by the author.

I echo Alyson, I would read the book and then start from the 1st one, it’s nice to get to know the main characters and where they fit into the storyline.

@Jean yes it is nice to start from scratch

Sometimes going back and reading The missing books becomes dated

@Patricia I suppose it depends on how many you’ve missed.I think that would be the case with Peter Robinson as he’s written a lot .

1
Patricia

Jennifer Price not actually read Peter must confess. Could say the same of Rebus or Quintin Jardine books

1
JenniferQuestion author

@Patricia I’ve read Peter Robinson in the past but not much lately. Found so many new authors here! Not read any Rebus & not heard of Quintan Jardine.

I try to look when I’m buying a book, that if it’s in a series I read in order.

It depends on how far in I am into the book but most likely. I often do a quick google when in the book store or double check when downloading on kindle to make sure. I started doing this after downloading the 1st book in a series and then had a years wait for the second book.

I asked because I started a few books mid series & then was informed on here I was mid series .I finished the books then got the previous to catch up .

Do other readers occasionally feel manipulated by finding books coming out in series? I don’t mean books about the same character, but those that depend on your knowing what happened in an earlier work.

No not necessarily. I read Tim Weaver’s I Am Missing and Steve Cavanagh’s Th1rt3en as standalones but both were book 4/5 of a series. Didn’t spoil my enjoyment of them..

I like Lucy read I am missing I never knew until recently there were others. I have also been reading a book and found out it was a series I finished the book and then began from the beginning

I’m reading Elly Griffiths’ The Blood Card, which is the 3rd of the Stevens & Mephisto books. I knew it was part of a series but picked it up in a charity shop and fancied a “period piece” story. It mentions stuff from previous books but she covers the salient points well enough that it doesn’t detract from the current book. I think that’s the secret of writing series well – they make you want to read the others but you enjoy this one anyway, even if you don’t.

No hard and fast rules for me…. if it REALLY grabbed me, possibly. If I was enjoying it but not sure, I might finish the book then go back, read the others and reread the book again.
