If you start a book, but don’t finish it (and don’t intend to), do you count that book as “read” or not? Follow-up; how far into the book counts?

No, I don’t count it as read.

In general, I don’t, but there are some I read most of, and realized it wasn’t worth finishing, so I read enough to know. I’m wondering how often people do that, and whether it counts in their estimation.

If I can’t get Into a book within 50 pages, I move on.

If you have read most of it, you might aswell read what’s left of it and finish it properly.

I also don’t count it as read until the last page is read. Regardless of how much I read

If not finished you can put it in a DNF (Did Not Finish) pile/list. That way you’ll always remember you didn’t like it for whatever reason and don’t try to reread it by accident!

I’ve found a lot of times in conversation, either my friends or I will mention a book and have an opinion, and may or may not mention whether we finished it. It’s just interesting at what point it’s considered read, and at what point you feel you can judge the book.

But, I agree with your method, I’m not sure how to list them on my GoodReads…lol

I’m the kind of person that struggles to finish a book no matter how much I’m disliking it. There have only been a couple I’ve not finished for one reason or another.

I’ve left mine in the To Read list but created a DNF shelf that I also add them to so I remember.

Don’t count it. Unless it’s a total bomb I usually leave a bookmark in so I can quickly skim what I’ve read then pick it up again. In fairness, it’s not usually the books fault but me not being in the mood for the genre or something. Book count this year is 51. ?

I can relate, I’m not sure though, I feel it’s 50/50 the book being bad or not my thing, and the other half me not being in the mood. I read a lot, so I don’t really feel bad about it, unless it’s something others have been raving about and I think I’d like it if I could just get past some dull portion.

Buckley

I’ll read almost anything but can’t stand really bad writing. That’s the only type of book I’ll abandon completely! The rest I know I’ll probably go back to when the mood takes me again. Life’s too short for bad writing! ?

I only count it if I have finished the book

I can’t ever remember it happening… I have a couple books on pause, cause I’m having trouble getting into their rhythm… but I don’t count them as unfinished. Just on hiatus.

I don’t count it, but have started keeping an abandoned list and track it there, because I feel like I should get credit for the time I did invest. Maybe a couple words or sentences as to why.

I literally can’t leave a book unfinished, I will always go back to it at some point… OCD at its best… I literally started a book before my son was born and finally just finished it a few months ago… and my son in now 6 ??

If I toss it at any point, it’s forever a non-read–and I never return to give it a second chance. As they say, “So many books, so little time.”

That’s a good point, skipping chapters? How much of the middle can you leave out?

0
Lori

It depends on the book…..sometimes I skim the middle and read the last chapters…in my mind, I “finished ” it..????

Chrissie

I have to finish it before I count it as read…

If I don’t finish it, I don’t count it as read, but rather as “attempted to read.”

It depends on how far I’ve managed to go. Less than 50%, it stays in “want to read” (possibly for years). Otherwise, I write a review starting “DNF…”

I do, just so it’s not cluttering up my to-read list and to prevent an accidental re-read when I just wasn’t interested the first time. I also put books I don’t finish on a DNF list. But I personally don’t really care about the numbers of books I’ve read per year, so I don’t mind marking them as read at all.

If I don’t like a book I instantly put it somewhere that I know I will not grab it to read again

1
Heather

I count it as “read” and put it in my “DNF shelf” on Goodreads. But I don’t give it a star rating so it doesn’t affect the overall rating.

You can’t leave a book unfinished. If you don’t intend on finishing it , then don’t f*cking start reading it

Wow…what a callow comment.

2
Yentl

It’s my opinion
So if you have a problem with that , keep it for yourself
A book is something that speaks to you , before you even read it.
And if you don’t feel that with a book then you shouldn’t start reading it

Most things that come from a person are an opinion. This is known as subjective truth. A fact, is an objective truth, which can be supported by evidence. I don’t have a problem with your opinion, it is yours, the problem is the harsh way you stated it, and that it’s coming from a very narrow place. Thus, it’s an opinion, and valid as that, but it is also callow.

Yentl

Just leave me the f alone woman!
I see so many comments that i don’t like . But i don’t go reacting on everyone.
And yes it’t harsh , Because i am harsh , life fucked me up many times so that made me harsh . If you would now leave me alone please

-1
MagdaQuestion author

I think you might want to step back and read what was said to you, and how. Also, consider that life is what you make it, and you decide how you respond and go from here.

Just screw you okay!
LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE !!!
And don’t even think you’re worth it to have an opinion about my life.

Ha! I’ve asked myself that question about The Great Gatsby. I’ve gotten 60-70% through it twice but just can’t finish it – so boring. So, should I count it 120-140% finished? Hmm, the tough questions in life. 😉

If I don’t like a book, I pass it on to someone else. I do not count the books I’ve read, far too many. If you ask about one I can tell you if I’ve read it or not. I have books on my bookshelf that I still intend to read but haven’t got to them yet. I’m now age 87 and been reading since childhood ever chance I got. My past time.

I count it as not read. And then put ‘bad book’ or ‘boring’ on that line for my own review so I don’t read it again
