Historical fiction doesn’t usually appeal to me (with the exception of the Holocaust) so I typically don’t read that. Not a fan of Western, either. But if a book comes with a high recommendation I’ll give it a chance regardless of the genre!

@Janette way too dramatic

I 99% agree. I actually don’t mind some of Ted Dekker’s stuff. But it’s not like the Christian romance. It’s more along the lines of C.S. Lewis. Fiction, with subtle Christian undertones.

Most of it just isn’t good writing, and can get ‘preachy’.

GR is my go to too.

0
Lorelei

Agreed. I like mystery and some old
Gothic but they’re often lumped in with horror/gore, which I can’t tolerate at all. So it makes discerning the content very difficult.

1
Paula

@Hazel THANKU! I had no idea I could choose recommendations. After just finding this, the only checkmark was for horror. Now NO MORE HORROR listed.

2
Paula

What truly chaps me is I emailed GoodReads support staff about this issue. I was not informed I could make changes on my own. I was told to rate more books so they could get an idea what genres I read…..I had 302 books on my TBR shelf! Could that have provided a clue?!

WOW – I love your honest responses – me: romance, chick-lit, anything with airbrushed buffed male/female on the cover. Thank you for feeding my curiosity ???
Ps. I have never tried to read a Western. I might put one in my TBR pile.

1
Reply
Filipa

I used to have the same rule about airbrushed people on the cover and I’m still extremely suspicious of those books but I’ve accepted that fantasy and sci-fi authors, for some reason, now prefer that to illustrated covers, so sometimes I will give some of them a chance (like with Sarah J. Maas).

So, those who said horror, you’ve never read a Stephen King? This is a tough question for me. I have genres I prefer over others but I don’t know if there’s one I would say I’d NEVER read.

1
Reply
Shari

I don’t care for Stephen King myself but I agree about choosing a genre NEVER to read. Maybe nonfiction if I had to choose one.

0
Elva

Agree. The genres I least like are based on my experience in reading more than 1 book from that genre. I don’t like Romance novels. But I’ve read books where the romance advanced and enhanced the plot. Christian books I’ve read were poor excuses to push an ideology (to me). But the world is full of stories where religious views and/or religious conflicts ARE the story.

0
Bonnie

I avoid blatant romance, but sometimes end up reading something I didn’t realize was going to be romance and liking it…. like Outlander

1
Elva

Outlander is a great example of how love/romance drives plot. I didn’t like that book. I didn’t like Clare.
