Just one? Neverwhere, easily.

There are some that I like more (American Gods) and some that have a more distinct style (Stardust, Good Omens, Coraline), but Neverwhere is probably the best overall example of his writing style.

Like, you might or might not love Stardust, or Good Omens, or Coraline, but reading any of those wouldn’t really give you a good feel for his writing overall. Whereas if you like Neverwhere, you can be pretty sure you’ll like most of his work.

Thought about picking this one, but didn’t because it’s co-authored. Still though, one of my favorites.

1
Victoria

I know, but it has such a dry humour that it’s still my favourite. And I like t h e fact that Neil was a superfan for terry before he was published /started writing.

1
Jason

Fair points. I have a bookshelf headboard on my bed, and it’s one of the books that sits there.

My copy is autographed by Pratchett, but not (yet) Gaiman.

Victoria

I once read somewhere that he loves signing that book because most are crinkly, stained, or cracked and he likes to see that people read it so often.

1
Victoria

Maybe you could send an email or so to ask if you could send it by mail and have it sent back? He seems like he would appreciate someone crazy enough to ask it?

1
Jason

@Victoria that’s an amazing idea, and worth a try! If he actually goes for it, I’ll find this thread again and send you a photo!
