I would like some suggestions for a humorous book for my book club.
Hello, I would like some suggestions for a humorous book for my book club. We recently lost one of our members to breast cancer and are in need for some levity and hope. Thanks so much.
Your group might like Julie and Romeo by Jeanne Ray.https://www.amazon.com/Julie-Romeo-Novel-Jeanne-Ray/dp/0307986721
Thank you
@Myung I am sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Reading is a great form of therapy; I’m glad you have one another.
Wilt by Tom Sharpe. It’s the first of a series of 4 and was recommended to me by a lady in my book club. I have never found a book so funny! I literally laughed out loud xxx
Any of sophie kinsella’s books!
This is a character based comedy and a quick easy read xx

The Woman who Went to Bed for a Year by. Sue Townsend. Anything by P. G. Wodehouse. Any of the Just William books by Richmal Crompton
I just finished The Rosie Project ( they made a movie but never saw it) and I actually laughed out loud while reading. It’s a possibility.
Wait, they made a movie??? Loved the book.
I also recommend The Rosie Project!
It’s the book I thought of as well.
I laughed out loud while reading this book too. It’s a good one. I’m so sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry. Bill Bryson’s A Walk Through the Woods is funny.
This is my great go-to for a good feeling book-humorous: Miss Pettigrew Lives for The Day
Then watch the movie!
Janet evanovich or Carl Hiaasen.
Hiaasen!??
Fannie flagg
Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler. Sweet and funny https://www.amazon.com/vinegar-girl-anne-tyler/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Avinegar+girl+by+anne+tyler
Sushi for Beginners
I am sorry for your loss. I hope this book will bring some cheer to you and your group.
My apologies for the oversight. Thank you for the reminder.
A man called Ove.
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson or One for the Money by Janet Evanovich.
Three Men In A Boat by Jerome K. Jerome. Funniest book ever. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons is very funny too. P.G. Wodehouse wrote lots of funny books, Code of the Woosters is my personal favourite, but most of them are very funny. My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell is hilarious.
So sorry for your loss. I would recommend Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady by Florence King…..hilarious. X
You’ll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein, A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Where did you go Bernadette?
The Rosie Project. ?
Angry Housewives eating bon bons
First thing I thought of. One of my favorites
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. I’ve read it several times, and it always makes me laugh out loud.
Any of Fannie Flagg’s books….funny, laughable, but usually with a subtle message.
My condolences to your book club. For something lighthearted, any David Sedaris book will do.
2 days ago I just finished FOOD by Jim Gaffigan… HILARIOUS!!!! I am still laughing days after. 🙂
Dolls behaving badly (not girls behaving badly)
The Rosie Project!
I LOVE this book!
My recommendation isn’t really humorous though there are some humorous parts. I recommend the Mitford series by Jan Karon. I’d start with her first book At Home in Mitford. Her books are good for what ails you. I bought them for my mother-in-law when my father-in-law died and she loved them.
Hmmm… reminds me of Angry Housewives by Landvik,
Moving by Jenny Éclair. Fantastic book.
The Rosie Project
Loved this book!
@Julie Me too
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Also the Stephanie Plum mysteries by Janet Evanovitch.
Christopher Moore is hilarious though a bit scandalous.
Crimes Against a Book Club. Any of Sophie Kinsella’s novels.
The Rosie Project.
Love Sophie Kinsella’s books. So funny and light.
Nine Women, One Dress
Wishin and hopin by wally Lamb
Karma by Donna Augustine or What To Say Next by Julie Buxbaum. It’s not funny per se, but it’s so heart warming.
It’s refreshing to see how many people posted “The Rosie Project”. I have a good friend who couldn’t read the book because she said Don was too annoying and it really made me dislike her. Has that ever happened to anybody?
I think the author really nailed the Asperger’s Syndrome. I found him to be delightful!
Not me. I loved that book.
@Jaye, agreed. He was real and I found him so lovable.
My book club loved this book. I found it absolutely delightful.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I would recommend Knut Hamsun – Hunger. I remember finding it really amusing. Or Notes from Underground by Dostoevsky.
The Miss Julia books are funny.
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I found this book to be incredibly uplifting.
Jen Lancaster’s memoirs (Bitter is the New Black; Bright Lights, Big Ass; Such a Pretty Fat; Pretty in Plaid) I love all of hers but her early stuff was the best.
The Rosie Project is a good option. A more healing option, which might bring a few tears, is Gabrielle Zevin’s the Storied Life of AJ Fikry.
I hate everyone, except you by Clinton Kelly. Or Wishful drinking by Carrie Fisher.
Second (or third) David Sedaris, Sophie Kinsella and Rosie Project! Loved AJ Fikry and Eleanor Oliphant, though found both a little more on the sad than funny side. Looking forward to reading the others!
If you like new adult books the one that I laughed out loud with was wallbanger from the cocktail series. All I can say is meow! Lol
Alice Clayton is the author
