It was a good movie, but I felt that there was an implication that she could only “become Jane” with the help of a man. It also annoyed me that in one scene he’s showing her (apparently for the first time) a book that it’s well known was one of her favorites since she had been quite young.
I think it’s okay that other people help us to become who we were meant to be. 🙂 Yeah, there were definite discrepancies between fact and fiction there! 😉
@Jamie it never occurred to me that women back then approached marriage the way we think about careers.
This especially gave me a deeper understanding of Mrs Bennet, Charlotte Lucas and Lydia.
Reading this play also helped me realize how ahead of her time Austen was to have heroine like Elizabeth Benet. There’s a nice scene between her and Caroline Bingley about how an intelligent woman would hurt her “career” prospect.
So, reading this play was a real eye opener for me.
I have enjoyed all of her books, Pride and Prejudice being my favorite. Anne Hathaway was wonderful in the role of Jane Austen. And who can forget Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy!

Jamie Tolstoy Well, let’s see a movie/book called “Becoming [insert male writer’s name here]” where he only does so with the assistance of a woman.
@Leslie I don’t think I’m sure what you’re getting at. ?
I preferred Miss Austen Regrets.
oooh, I’ll have to watch it!
I watched it also and agree!
I thought, but could be wrong, ‘becoming Jane’s is about Charlotte Bronte, where Jane in the title is referring to Jane Eyre.
I’m not sure why I think this.
It could be you’re thinking of something else. The movie I’m talking about is about Jane Austen.
@Holly yeah, probably
I keep thinking there was something with ‘becoming’ and Jane Eyre. Hmmm – maybe it will come to me 🙂
Right now I’m reading an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice for the stage by Helen Jerome, it’s making me look at this novel in a new way.
@Anisha What new view did it give you?

Jane actually refers to Jane Austen and is about her early life and her love for Thomas @Sally
Thomas Langlois Lefroy….somehow I accidentally hit enter and it added Sally’s name. Irritating.
I love this film; it’s one of my favorites!! 🙂 I think Anne Hathaway did great as Jane!! 🙂
@Jamie me too!
@Holly Are you a Jane Austen fan, also?
@Jamie, yes I am.
