Same here. Planning on rereading the series because I haven’t read the last book yet, will be starting with The Assassin’s Blade again.

I started with Assassin’s blade and it was really good when some of the characters popped up later in the series and you already knew the backstory of them

Throne of glass. Assassins blade was made to be read either between 1&2 or between 2&3

I read many posts to read it before QOA, but I wished I read it before TOG. It would’ve helped me a bit better.

Read throne or glass first. Read in order of publishing. That way assassin’s blade is deeper more meaningful story.

Assassin’s Blade first.. I know its novellas but believe me nothing is spoiled and you’ll understand more why Celaena is where she is at the beginning of Tog.

TAB first…

Throne of glass, and then ready assassins blade before heir of fire, that way you won’t get to many spoilers

My vote for TOG first and TAB before QOS

Assasin’s Blade. The background is vital to understanding and fully appreciating Celaena’s evolution.

Everyone has different opinions on this. Depends on you as a reader. How do you feel about novellas? I started with Throne of Glass and read AB after Crown of Midnight. I’m SO glad I did because I felt like AB was pretty dull. I probably would have DNF it had I not already been connected to the characters and story.

Start with Throne of Glass, before Queen of Shadows read Assassin’s Blade.

Throne of Glass. You shouldn’t read a prequel first.
Read Assassin’s Blade before Queen of Shadows though, or you’ll be lost.

I read The Assassin’s Blade first, and I preferred doing it that way as I felt more of a connection with Celaena that way for Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight. If I hadn’t read the prequel first, I think I wouldn’t have liked as her character as much in those first 2 books. It doesn’t spoil anything that happens in the series, so I say go for it if you want to!

@Amy-Louize totally yes! This is what I felt too

Throne of Glass. I enjoyed Assassin’s Blade but feel if I’d started with that it may have turned me off the series. It was good, but only as a ‘fill in the gaps’ set of stories, rather than something that is really strong or sets the tone in any way.

@Amelia ??? I didn’t like the acotar series so I’m going to give this one a try.

0
Amelia

Honestly, its better than acotar but its still pretty bad.
Imma get attacked for this but theres a lot thinly veiled racism/misogyny/homophobia etc in it, and the writing gets worse as the series progresses.
Good luck, though

1
LisanneQuestion author

@Amelia that was one of the (many) reasons why I didn’t like acotar; I was hoping tog might be different.

I read Assassins Blade between book 4 and 5.

Throne of glass. Assassin’s blade introduces new characters from celenas past and relevant plots for the books after heir of fire

1
Reply
Tasha

I recommend Throne of Glass first just to get introduced to the characters and what’s happening and then read Assassin’s Blade as kind of a backstory to explain why Celaena (*wink* *wink* to my post Crown of Midnight friends who laugh at this) is such a big deal.

Assassins blade gives some good background info without spoilers and it’s a quick read so I’d start with it

TAB first, that way you’ll understand ToG

Sonia

TOG!!!!?

1
Reply
Mariarita

TAB
Necessary for Celaena’s background and secondary characters
(Plus there’s a spoiler for it in TOG, so just go with TAB first)

1

Bianca

Assassins Blade!!!! It gives so much context to tog, without spoilers, if you read tog first the tone will feel completely different and may even be off-putting. Assassins Blade happens fisst so it should be read first.

1
Reply
Lisa

@Bianca the same goes for the other way around. Some people found tab so boring they didnt continue the series

1
Lisa

Tog. But if you cant get into it, then read tab.
Some people started with tab and didnt like is so didnt read on.
So if you start with tab, skip it and read tog.
Its not a neccecairy book to read.
You wont get a straight answer to that question

It really doesnt matter. I know plenty of poeple who did it in between every book or after the whoole series. Or at all. Like it really doesnt affect the story. IT will just give you some more back story. If you want to read it tho i would reccomend before empire of storms

I read The Assassin’s Blade after Heir of Fire. I like starting a series with its first book, not the prequel. So going to suggest the same for you.

I recommend ToG then AB then the rest of the series.

Throne of glass, crown of midnight, heir of fire, assassins blade, queen of shadows, empire of storms, tower of dawn and kingdom of ash. That’s how I read it and that’s how sjm recommends as well

2
Reply
Sheena

@Sammy-Jo Actually, SJM specifically recommends Assassin’s Blade first.

1
Jamie-Marie

@Sammy-Jo I read then in that order too, and I really liked reading them in the order they were published! I also liked starting TOG and not knowing much about the past and letting things fall into place

Juli

The Assasins Blade first. You need to know why Caelena acts the way she does other wise you might want to punch her in the face

Reply
Alanna

I started with throne of glass and read the assassins blade after crown of midnight but as others have said, as long as you read it before queen of shadows you should be alright

2
Reply
Kayla

I don’t think it really matters. But after reading assassins blade I reread throne of glass and it had so much more emotion in it because you understand her feelings and actions.

Throne of Glass. Don’t read AB until you’ve read Queen of Shadows (in my opinion)

2

Hannah

@Amie really??? What after QoS?

0
Amie

@Hannah I feel like by that point I’d developed strong emotions to the characters and it made going back more enjoyable for me personally

2
Mary

@Amie same for me

1
Hannah

@Amie, so nothing in the plot is a spoiler?

0
Amie

@Hannah I wouldn’t say so, AB just gives more in depth connection stories to characters you’ve come across

1
Hannah

@Amie, okay! Thanks.

I always read in the order that they were released. I feel like the author did it like that for a reason ??‍♀️ Which would have you reading ToG first

I would definitely read Assassin’s Blade first. It will help piece together things that are said throughout the first few books
