What books do you normally read? Types of stories? I would start with what you like, or even a retelling of a classic, and move on from there.

@Sakshi Any of Agatha Christie’s novels, Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Dracula, or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would be a great place to start, then!

Jennifer

@Sakshi Edgar Allen Poe’s works too!

Thanks a lot for all your help ?

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiel Hammet or The Big Chill are good classic mysteries also Agatha Christie

1
Deepak

Start with the easier ones which will not turn you off of classics which is the case with the majority of people due to the difficulty in reading them.

Start with the ones you are interested in and are modified for children where the language is simpler and then graduate to others.

I think any book which is relevant in today’s world inspite of the year/decade they were written in. Something that has staying power… I guess.

What’s your favourite genre??

Classics have a huge range of different genres, it would help to start with a more modern one and within your preferred genre.

My “classics” are different from everyone else’s. I have a degree in Political Science. I think anything by Plato and Aristotle would be excellent, especially Plato’s Republic. The trinity of Locke, Hobbes, and Rousseau. Jean-Paul Sartre, Kirkregarde, Schopenhauer, John Stuart Mill, Zbigniew Brzezinski. Those are my starters for the classical thinkers of the world.

Good but not as a starter. Same with Dante’s Infirno and a few others.

Can’t see why not though… Too big?

Dante’s inferno is fine for a starter. It’s a brutally visceral tale. You just need a good translation and footnotes.

This is great list and they aren’t all from American authors. There is a good variety of old and newer classics. There are some videos of authors and celebrities discussing their favorites…

Little Women is a great start. Doesn’t “feel” like a classic in the “Classical” sense, if you’ll forgive the pun. Also The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway, A Christmas Carol by Dickens, Much Ado about Nothing by Shakespeare

To be honest, it really depends on your reading interests:
1. Adventure – Jules Verne
2. Horror – Frankenstein, Dracula
3. Romance – Austen
4. Drama – To Kill a Mockingbird, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Dickens
5. Sci-Fi – Asimov, HG Wells, Douglas Adams
6. Mystery – Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier
7. Noir – Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett
So many more categories and books I would recommend, but that is just because I am a huge classics junkie.

@Adnan Rebecca is the classic one that most people would start with – with one of the best first lines in any book. Jamaica Inn is good and they just made a movie out of Cousin Rachel.

Adnan

I’m currently reading To Kill A Mockingbird as my first classic (i’ve tried others before but couldn’t finish them because it was a big switch from my usual YA) and I think it’s grand !!! I’d definitely recommend this one because it’s easier to read than most classics in terms of language.
