I know what you mean! However like you say the car is a great place for me because of commuting time. The whispersync? feature is amazing! Feel like I can get more absorbed in a book due to getting a bit of storytime to and from work.
Have you tried speeding the reading up?

I can never concentrate for long ,listening to an audio book , I keep drifting off thinking of other things ! Given up on them now ! My father was a great reader until he got macular degeneration , and he loved his audio books , had quite a collection and got a lot of CDs /cassettes from the library ! ?
I’m listening to audio books in the car to and from work. Madness the journey more enjoyable. Some books are way better than others. A lot has to do with the actor who is reading them. I’m going through about 2 books a week!
