@Kat why isn’t it comfortable?

@Teresa the lighting/script isn’t the same not as easy to read as the kindle. You can’t read on an iPad in bright sunshine either.

1
Kat

I think mini iPad would be okay, but I have bigger version

0
Allison

@Kat I have iPad mini & it’s definitely not as comfortable to hold as the kindle

Cathy

Many differences…size, battery life and hard to read in the day light. iPad is heavier too. The main difference, of course, is that the iPad is a tablet and the Kindle is just an eReader.

@Cathy thank you, that makes sense!

@Teresa The Kindle has a much much longer battery life, too, is more compact than the iPad and has a back light that you can dim as you wish. It stores thousands of books, too. You can also read it outside…which the iPad doesn’t lend itself to.

My husband does and he loves it. With an iPad, you get the access to the Internet and all the apps and games and stuff of course. With the iPad, you have to read on the Kindle app and personally, I am not a fan of the app.

@Cynthia does your husband use the iBooks app at all?

0
Allison

@Cynthia the iPad app is not as good as an actual kindle.

0
Cynthia

@Teresa I don’t think so. How is that different? I have never heard of that one.

0
Cynthia

@Allison Yeah, I figured as much. I don’t even like the Kindle app on my phone very much, so I figured I would feel the same about the iPad app. I was in the market for a new Kindle recently and he suggested I get an iPad. Guess it works for him, but I knew it would not work for me. Got the new Paperwhite instead. ?

0
TeresaQuestion author

@Cynthia I don’t know how it is different. It is an app that automatically comes on the iPad when you purchase the iPad. I only read physical books at this time.

The iBook app frustrates me to no end! I think I’m Android-blind though.

I use the Kindle app on my iPad and prefer it to my Kindle.

I find it very difficult to read on an iPad. A kindle is much better. It’s like reading from a proper page. No reflection. I have the paperwhite.

I used to. Have a kindle now. The iPad was far too uncomfortable to hold. Too heavy and didn’t fit in your hand easily like a kindle does. Plus battery is bloody awful. Kindle lasts forever and ever. It’s like one of those old Nokia phones that last week’s without a charge ?

I own both and prefer the Kindle Fire to read. I can turn my background black and turn the brightness low. It allows me to read for long periods of time without eye strain or headaches.

A Kindle has e-ink, so the screen reads like paper. It’s much better for your eyes than reading on a screen – also less exhausting.

I always read on my IPad and I have a kindle also. You can read on both, but on the IPad you can do everything else.

It’s similar. The way we do it is having the kindle app and read from that. I have it on my phone too.

I don’t like reading on my iPad, even with the Kindle app. It is much harder on my eyes and I just don’t like the format. The Kindle is much easier to read and feels more like a real book, although I know that it isn’t. Plus – I can read in the sun on the Kindle and not on the iPad.

I read on my iPad and it’s fine – I don’t have a kindle so I can’t compare BUT I think I prefer the larger screen on my iPad vs the smaller kindle screen which is a main reason for not changing over to a kindle –

Timing. I replaced my bigger iPad for a mini specifically for reading/taking on our Alaskan cruise in May. I was just noting last night how much I’ve enjoyed reading on my iPad – have been doing a lot of it – and need to pick up a print book as, well, holding a print book is awesome!
I use the Kindle app. It works fine for me. In fact, I think someone commented above they didn’t like it making me wonder why. ??‍♀️

I love reading on my iPhone or iPad.. the quality of the screen is so much better. However these devices tend to overheat in the sun (we live in Phoenix.. so lots of it..) and an e-ink screen is readable in full sunlight.
So I pick whichever device is most suitable.. iPhone, iPad, Kindle, paper or audio.. as long as I can enjoy the stories!

I have the Kindle app on my iPad and phone. The phone is a little small for me to read for any length of time. The iPad is a little heavy for me to hold, but not bad. I use it while riding my exercise bike. I love the Kindle screen so much more – more like a page from a book. It’s lightweight, can be held with one hand, I keep it in my purse and carry it with me wherever I go. I have a strap with a loop for your finger to help hold it so I don’t have to hold onto it with my fingers. Kindles are so much easier for me to read than books.

Just the same as a kindle, except the battery doesn’t last as long. One pro is that your library consists of book covers, rather than just titles which I like.

I have an iPad and use it to read books from the Apple store. I also have the Kindle app on my iPad and use that to read books that are available through Kindle but not the Apple Store. I prefer the Apple Store. They have actual page numbers instead of location. The Apple is more like reading an actual book I think.

I had both and gave my Kindle away. The iPad is much, much more than an eReader. A new iPad Pro is as easy on the eyes as a Kindle for me, allows me to download and read books from a wider variety of sources, I can download maps and other information when traveling, I can get my email on an iPad, I can use spreadsheets on an iPad, I can use a word processor on an iPad, and I can play games on an iPad.

The only downsides are:
1. Shorter battery life, but… unless you are camping with no access to power it does not matter
2. Can’t read in direct sunlight. But… who actually wants to sit and read in direct sunlight for long periods.
3. Weight, it is heavier. A Kindle paperwhite weighs less than half of an 11” iPad Pro which weighs 1 lb or 460 grams. But… still less than a hefty book.

And I forgot, I can download and watch movies and TV series from Netflix on my iPad when traveling.

I only read with my mini iPad or mobile. Not much difference to a tree book really, plus I can press on any words I need the meaning for (which incidentally I tried with a book book the other day and was surprised that nothing happened! ??)

I only read on my Kindle Oasis (Paperwhite before this) because the screen is too harsh and hurts my eyes if I read too long on an iPad or a Kindle Fire.

If you use an iPad you are using an app. If you have a kindle you actually have a kindle account and get certain privileges like a monthly loan, a monthly ‘first’ for 99p or free with Prime.

I use books and kindle but still prefer books. The one good thing with kindle is that if you don’t understand a word, you press on it and it gives a definition and examples, great to learn a new language.

I recently sold my kindle and use my kindle app on my iPad. Only difference is that it’s huge compared to my little paperwhite and I can’t sit outside in the sun bc there’s a glare. I’m requesting the new paperwhite hat just came out for Christmas so I can read at the beach this year.

I use the kindle app on my Samsung tablet. I keep the brightness turned down and I love it. Don’t really feel the need to have a kindle at all when you can use the app on any device. I did buy one when they first came out but never use it now. Not even sure if it still works lol.?

I used to read on a Samsung tab, but it was too harsh on my eyes, too heavy to read comfortably for long periods, and was more difficult to read in bright sunlight because of glare.

Your limited with kindle on some books as to how many devices you can read on I had an iPad and iPod as well as my kindle paper white and on my desktop now I don’t use anything other than my kindle

1

Amanda

An iPad is a tablet. But if you buy a kindle ereader (Paperwhite, oasis, etc) it’s strictly for reading and much easier on the eyes and hands than reading on an iPad, kindle fire, and other tablets and also helps you focus better on just reading.
