I’m in love with two Australian authors. Richard Flanagan and Peter Carey. Death of a River Guide and Narrow Road to the deep North by Flanagan and Oscar and Lucinda and Brief History of Kelly Gang by Peter Carey
Hannah Kent is an Australian author, though her two books so far (both historical fiction) aren’t set in Australia, instead Iceland and Ireland, respectively
An older novel by Catherine Gaskin – Sarah Dane, about the convict immigrant experience. She also wrote one about the Australian gold rush, but can’t recall title. A good non fiction book about Australian history and culture is The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes (I think).
Finding The Man who Loved Children, by Christina Stead as a teenager, in the late 50’s.. I have been on the search and lookout for Australian writers.. many marvelous writers have mentioned..
Only Killers and Thieves by Paul Howarth is supposed to be magnificent, but I haven’t read it yet. The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan was really good.
Mallawindy by Joy Dettman is a great book! Markus Zusak (The Book Thief – yes, he’s Australian!), Tim Winton
