Nightworld series by L.J.Smith. Very different from her Vampire Diaries series but everyone I know who has read it considers it much much better!

Also, if it’s vampires I’d recommend The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. I’ve only read the first book but absolutely loved it!

If you haven’t already read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, they’re much better vampires than Stephanie Meyer’s sparkly vegetarians. Lol. They’re actually scary.

It gets better after the third if you weren’t sure about it. There’s a lot of character development the Harry and Murphy go through before the series really kicks into gear. I listened to it through audible with James Marsters reading. It’s a great listen.
