I need some exciting book, because i can’t seem to find anything that grabs my attention!

I’ve been in a reading rut lately. The last book I completed was The Cuckoo’s Nest, by Robert Galibraith, probably almost a year ago. I need some suggestions to pull me back in! I tried to read Game of Thrones and just couldn’t get into it. I love fantasy, comedy, romance, and mystery, but i can’t seem to find anything that grabs my attention!

I’ll check it out! I keep getting 2 chapters into a book and losing interest and it’s killing me.

Some good comedies that I’ve read are To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis and Ballad of the Whiskey Robber by Julian Rubinstein

I couldn’t get into them! I think i’m holding onto my expectations from Harry Potter too much, the other two just didn’t snare me.

It took me a while to get through Cuckoo’s Calling for the same reason, but I ended up falling in love lol. If you like a YA magic school type story with older characters than the HP series, you may like the Black Mage series by Rachel E Carter. I’m reading it currently. There are 3 novels in the series and they aren’t terribly long.

Isn’t that the other writer name that J K Rowling uses? (Harry Potter)

It is, yes, and i think that is part of the reason that I am having trouble getting into it; Harry Potter is my favorite series on earth and i was expecting this series to be slightly more similar in the writing style

How about easing into the habit by picking up a good book of short stories? I would highly recommend Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. I have loved her since. 🙂

If you want a light mystery that’s different, try Spencer Quinn’s Chet and Bernie mysteries … they are a hoot and told from the dog’s point of view! Lisa Lutz’s Spellman Files series is funny and fast, light reading.

In a similar vein, Bruce Cameron’s “The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man”.

The Kingkiller Chronicles are absolutely fantastic if you don’t mind longer books.

When I need an easier read, I get myself fostering related books. They’re easy to read but can be emotionally challenging sometimes. Cathy Glass is my favorite writer for that.

Game of thrones is hard to read. I watched first season then read the first book. It really helped with the world building. Try something easier! Liane moriarty books are amazing or Jodi Picoult

I move to YA when in a slump. Wonder was great. Evelyn & Park was great. Even Nickle Bay Nick which is actually a middle schoolish book was good. It got me over my last hump!

There is some quality YA fantasy that help me when I’m in a slump. I’d recommend a Darker Shade of Magic or Six of Crows.

I reread when I hit a slump! Also listen to audiobooks. I loved The Dry by Jane Harper and Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz, both mysteries but outside my usual. I love John Sandford Prey series, Michael Connely’s Harry Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer series and James Lee Burke’s Dave Robichiex too…Will Patton is a great narrator. Have you read Lonesome Dove? So good…

I’d start with short books. Something like The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. It’s an adventure series set in the 9th century. Lots of action, a bit of history, quick moving. If you like it, get the second in the series.
