All these suggestions are brilliant, and so heartfelt – may I say I adore this page, and always look forward to new knowledge of my soulmates, ie books!
The Penderwicks series, Wonder, The Invention of Hugo Cabret (graphic novel), The War I Finally Won, and for non-fiction Following Atticus, and The Soul of an Octopus.
That you so much everyone. My niece and nephew need to have some fun reading instead of just playing on their xbox.
A friend recommends the Inkheart series.
Love Sugar Magic– might appeal to the girl more, but it’s about a Mexican girl discovering that her family are witches and that their bakery is used for magic etc. I think the second book is coming out soon, it’s so heartwarming and it’s got a great cover as well!! Undercover Princess is also super good. Also the David Baddiel books, the Explorer by Katherine Rundell, the Magisterium series, Septimus Heap and the Secrets of Nicholas Flamel are great for both <3
Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series – an underappreciated mix of mythology and modern heroism.
The golden compass ?
Maximum Ride
Babysitters Club series for the girl. Not so sure the boy would enjoy it. A Series of Unfortunate Events is good for both boys and girls.
His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass), Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (it has a whole series if they like it). And one I’ve never read but my students talk about all the time is The Land of Stories.

Skulduggery pleasant by derek landy ? they are amazing!!!!!
How To Train Your Dragon. Narnia. Dahl (like sort of a prelude to Orwell in my opinion). If you don’t mind, some classics like Twain’s books, Catcher in the Rye might be too soon. Animal Farm (iconic), Secret Seven is good as well
Also I second ASOUE, bc then u can watch the Netflix series if u have Netflix and do compare and contrast
And like an intro to that kind of writing style. Like narrative but narrator taking a huge role in the book, I live for that narrative style! But the movie is eh so better skip that

The 39 clues
Heist Society
Gallagher Girls series
Hex Hall
Chronicles of Narnia
Miss Peregrines series
A book I recently read was Falling Kingdoms, it’s like a young adult (very tame) version of game of thrones with all the characters having a connection or reason to rule the kingdoms. There is some battle/violence and it is young adult so it would probably be suitable for a mature 12/13 y/o or older, but it’s a good series to look into!
The alex rider series!
Molly Moon! It is very interesting and I loved them at my age. Suitable for boys and girls.
Books by Cornelia Funke. I loved her books!
Percy Jackson
percy jackson, R.L Stine’s Goosebumps series, Diary of a wimpy kid, famous five and Roald Dahl’s novels
The Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. I loved those books. Its great for kids who love spy books.
The land of stories books by Chris Colfer are really good, they’re kind of long but they give twists to regular fairy tales and to this day the land of stories series i still one of my favorites!
Skulduggery Pleasant
