i wish I had gotten a kindle fire, bc my library doesn’t offer books for kindle anymore. It depends on what you want to do with it. I’d like to use a tablet.

I have both and prefer the simplicity of the Paperwhite. I have enough technology, I just want a reader.

The paperwhite will be easier on your eyes for reading.

I have a Paperwhite and a Nook HD+ (it’s a tablet like the Fire) and I tend to get distracted when I’m on tablet and notifications pop up so I end up on social media ? With the Paperwhite, I get so much more reading done!

I don’t have a kindle, but I use the nook. I have a simple nook which is just an e reader and a Nook tablet.
I carry my simple look in my purse it small and compact my love it.
My nook tablet I keep it home and use at home I love it because it’s colored and I can do several things on it.
So if you’re a big reader you might want to get both want to carry in your purse a small one and the bigger one for home to be able to have color.

Oh yeah, Nook does not have pop up ads or notifications.
If I was you Google the two or visit the websites a Barnes & Noble and Amazon and compare them and see which one would be best for you.
When I first got my first eve reader which was a NOOK, I went to Barnes & Noble 34 different times playing with the ones they had and I played with the ones my boys got they got kindle for Christmas.
I went with a NOOK because I had a store I could go to to get help if needed which I have had.
The only downfall is there are books that Kindle has the Barnes & Noble don’t have.
Go figure it’s a bookstore.

I like the Kindle Paperwhite, because I don’t get distracted by popups or notifications. Reading time is reading time 🙂 But if you use the Fire for more things, I would say go ahead. I have been thinking about getting the fire for reading comics and having the kid read his books on, the illustrations are so beautiful in color

I don’t get pop-ups. Guess I managed to turn the off or something

1

I guess I did. Phew, I’d hate them lol

I get special offers, but only on lock screen

Cassandra

I have 3 Kindles so it be 60 for us lol

That’s a tough one. I have both and like both for various reasons, but I do find I use the fire more

I see a few saying the get pop-ups on the fire? I don’t get them ever. Not while surfing the web or reading. Wonder why some do

It has to do with the settings you can turn that off

I’d say paper white for reading and fire for it’s glorious colour and other uses. Depends if you only want to use a kindle for reading. You can watch BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime movies on a fire!

Paperwhite is better if you’re actually using it to read.

I have the kindle, paperwhite, and kindle hdx tablet. For addiction purposes. There is one advantage to having the tablet – I have the nook app on it so I can read on both platforms. I get a lot of B&N gift cards so then I can use them for digital books at B&N but still read on my kindle tablet. I like the paperwhite for when I want to do nothing but read.

Do Barnes and Noble members get discounts or perks on ebooks? I’m a member, but I don’t have a nook

0
Lori

@Cassandra no perks and typically B&N I’ve found ebook prices are a little higher than Amazon.

0
Cassandra

Oh darn. Okay guess I won’t look into nook. Thank you

0
Lori

@Cassandra if you have any tablet you can still use the Nook app. Not really a need for a dedicated Nook ereader. I also use my iPad mini for both kindle, nook, and library overdrive app. As I type all this I realize I might need a 10 step program for addiction ?

1
Cassandra

I have overdrive on my kindle and phone. It’s an awesome addiction lol

Robin

I have both. If you mostly want to read get the paper white. Much lighter.

It depends on your need. An ereader (like the paperwhite) is for reading. Period. Its screen does not reflect light like a tablet (Kindle Fire), and is easier to use in all types of settings – for reading.

The Kindle Fire is a tablet, just like an iPad (yes, yes, I know it’s nothing like an iPad, but for the purpose of this answer, it falls into the same category.) it is essentially a small computer on which you may access the internet, play games, get your email, and use it to read. The screen is highly reflective and difficult to read in bright sunlight.

Honestly, it depends on what you will be using the device for most. I prefer an ereader for reading, it’s easier on the eyes. I look at computer monitors all day. E-ink, the type of screen on an ereader, is a totally different technology.

What he said^^^.

Only I would add that for some, reading on the Kindle gives them headaches and causes their eyes to burn

1
Holly

I have both. I no longer use my Fire for reading. The Fire gave me headaches and made my eyes burn if I read on it too long. Also, you can’t read in sunlight on the Fire.

The Paperwhite is my favorite for ereading.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. It’s been really helpful and I think that I’m going to go for a Paperewhite because it will be for reading and as a few of you have pointed out, a tablet is distracting!

I love my paper white and always keep it in flight mode when not downloading books and have it on low light too and I agree that the battery life lasts a lot longer.

0
Kerry-Ann

I still love a real book though! But nothing beats a kindle for going on holiday!

0
Kerry-Ann

Kindle is perfect for that, especially if the book is really heavy.

0
Kerry-Ann

I’m like you – have a book permanently with me and an audible book for in the car while I’m driving and when I’m doing housework.

I have kindle fire 8 which is good, for doing other things as well as reading, kindle paper white is ok but I love, love,my Kobo ereader.

I bought the Kindle Paperwhite because I wanted a dedicated reader (without the distraction of email or Facebook, LOL). I LOVE it; the screen is non glare (great in the sun) and there’s a backlight for reading at night.

Kindle paperwhite if you want it for reading. Kindle fire if you want a crappy tablet that doesn’t work as well as most android tablets and doesn’t read as well as a real ereader.

I like it a lot. I’m very happy I decided to go this way. I’ve already added a lot of books from project Gutenberg and have even made my first kindle store purchase.

I have a Kindle Fire and use it for multiple things, reading included. I’ve had no issues with it. I started out with a paperwhite and wasn’t impressed, I wanted to see my book covers in color.

0
Cade

That’s fine if it works for you. I had a fire and didn’t care to read on it. I don’t like reading on my phone or computer for long periods either. The paperwhite screen is just easier on my eyes I guess.

0
Robert

Alexandria Anderson To each their own. Fire fits perfectly in my back pocket and my cargo pocket of my uniform.

0
Cade

The fire I had was basically the same size as the paperwhite. It was heavier, but about the same size if I remember. I just like the paperwhite because of the lack of built in distraction, the screen, and the battery life.

1
Robert

It is true that because it’s capable of so much, it can be difficult to focus just on reading with a Kindle Fire.

Cade

The paperwhite? No I haven’t yet

I personally enjoy my Paperwhite because I enjoy only being able to read on it. I have a phone and a laptop that I can do everything else on. I don’t need a third device for everything. Just my personal preference. ☺️

And the battery lasts longer, lol. Reading on the kindle fire for long periods of time always gives me headaches that I don’t get with the paper white.

0
Nay

My battery lasts for days if I read it a lot. Weeks if I read it a little at a time. I love it. I got it about four years ago and it still works great.

0
Nay

5 years is a long time, though. Phones certainly don’t last that long lol well, I’m on my very first iPhone after switching from Android, and it still works like it’s new, so I may be wrong about that hahaha

Loving books and loving to read can be different — the latter doesn’t care about the platform.

I’m getting it so I can read Net Galley books really – I can’t cope reading them on the computer. I would always go for a printed book, but when it’s not in print yet, then your need an electronic device of some sort!

Just for reading? I much prefer my Paperwhite to the Fire, but if you’re looking for the tablet experience, Fire is the way to go.

They’re different. A Paperwhite is great for ebooks and reading only. A Fire is great for accessing your prime account including movies, music, and books. Keep in mind that you will not have access to all the apps on the Google Play store on the Fire. Only the Amazon store. Both are great tabs and you cannot go wrong with either.

Paperwhite. A few friends have Kindle Fires and, although it seems a good product for the price, it’s really a tablet as opposed to an e-reader. I have a Paperwhite and, if it’s an e-reader you want then it excellent!! ?

Ha, yes I second that. I normally charge it about once a month depending on how time I’ve had to read.

0

Alexandria, I’m a total convert now. I refused to get one for ages claiming that I preferred ‘real’ books. I stand corrected, it’s excellent! ha ha

1

Alexandria, yeh and the backlight is excellent! ?

I have both. The back lighting, I have found out from my Dr., Is not good for you for bedtime reading.
