Mistborn because Name of the Wind’s third book has no release date yet

I’ve been waiting for a few years now ??

Both are great but name of the wind isn’t finished. IMO name of the wind will neverr be completed. Mistborn though is Sanderson. Sanderson is the most dependable author I read. Not to mention the series is earth shattering good.

Mistborn, because it’s finished.

Gotta be Mistborn

Mistborn’s good but I haven’t read Rothfuss as I’m not sure he’ll ever finish and I would hate not knowing what happened in the end.

Rothfuss is great but I agree with everyone. It’s not finished and you may be waiting for a while lol.

2
Norma

I don’t mind waiting if it is eventually finished, I’m just not sure he can or will deliver.

2
Jeanette

@Norma 100% agree

1
Richard

@Norma it’s been seven years since book 2. I’ve given up.

Mistborn was a really good series but The Name of the Wind is one of those stories that touches your soul. For me at least.

Mistborn.

Wait until Name is finished so don’t have to endure the pain of waiting forever like the rest of us

Both are good but overrated IMO

Almost verbatim what i came to say.

I have such a hard time recommending Kingkiller or even A Song of Ice and Fire.

Both are unfinished and who knows how the endings will affect the overall series.

No way can call them the best or even rank until done.

0
ShawnQuestion author

@Troy that is the reason why I have not bothered with A Song of Ice and Fire. I am really interested in the Kingkiller series but from what I gather it has been years upon years since the second book came out and no inclination as to when the series will be finished. That is a major turn off for me. I am all for reading books as they come out and waiting for the development and publishing cycles, but when a series is in limbo and you do not know if it will finish i have a hard time wanting to start the first book.

0
Troy

Yep

I’m not rereading either Kingkiller or Song until all the books are out

I’m fine with a year or two between books in a series but both those are approaching ridiculous stages.

0
Lucas

I find Rothfuss has rather weak characters but his prose is brilliant. Sanderson has mediocre prose but his characters are vastly more interesting.

The KKC isn’t done yet so I would recommend Mistborn if you can stomach Sandersons brand of humour.

Can someone pm me why people think mistborn is so good? I am nearly through book two and it was so damn boring until know. OK a few good fights but other than those, it was a pain to read

Lucas

I personally enjoyed it, but that was a decade ago. I find Sanderson unbearable to read now and I suspect I would hate Mistborn if I read it today.

But a lot of people have a massive boner for him. I used to and then I realized he kind of sucks, lol.

0
Nick

I have always enjoyed a good heist story and I liked the setting and the way he set up his magic system. I also really enjoyed the book Elantris but Warbreaker I only managed to get about a quarter of the way through before giving up on him as an author

1
Ian

Didn’t enjoy it that much myself but the volume of people that love it prove that is fine to not agree all the time. I just refrain from commenting normally

0
Troy

I’ve only read Mistborn and nothing in it was enough to make me rush out to read the others.

It was good, not great.

I’ll read the others eventually when there’s nothing else to read.

0
Richard

I honestly thought mistborn was mediocre but wax and Wayne is way better, also stormlight is great.

0
Richard

@Nick I agree about warbreaker.

0
Christopher

good to read, that there are some of you who didn’t enjoy it either. I always just read hyped posts and think what the heck people like about it

0
Lucas

@Richard Stormlight is good, but there’s a lot of scenes in it that don’t actually meaningfully tie into the story. Sanderson introduces a lot of characters who die in 1, 2 chapters and all it is to demonstrate one thing that could’ve been done in dialogue.

Sanderson is one of those authors who has grown popular enough where it seems some of the editors who handle his work don’t know how to tell him “no”.

0
Richard

@Lucas I’m not an author or even an aspiring one, thinking about editing or rewrites. (Though it is the interesting to read the stormlight first draft on his web sight and see how much it changed) I like Brandon for 2 reasons. He has novel magic systems and he treats writing as a career not an art. I still remember his advice to aspiring authors saying if you write a mere 300 words a day you will have a book in just a year. He does more than that but the principle remains that many authors refer to “inspiration” and “muses” and writers block. It’s a career just like any other.

1

Also I don’t mind people dying, even early in books. I’m pretty sure wheel of time, even though I like it, would have been better if more people died earlier.

1
Lucas

@Richard It’s a career, yeah. Most art is a career. The truth most people tend to find hard to grapple with when entering any job like that is that if you’re the type of artist who tries to rely on ‘inspiration’, the simple fact of the matter is you’re not going to produce. I don’t think his position in that regard is too unique versus other writers I’ve seen and followed.

I like his magic systems and how methodical they are, I also like how he can generally evoke some emotions (I found the ending of Warbreaker pretty moving) but I also hate the fact that he uses the same character archetypes in every book. I hate when he tells a joke he might as well be pulling the reader aside to say “Hey guys, here is some out-of-place comic relief!” I don’t think there’s more than 1-2 organic moments of humour; which wouldn’t be so bad if his humour also didn’t amount to a character blurting out inane things like “Old peoples butts aren’t trust worthy”.

I’m also fine with characters dying. I’m generally not satisfied if large numbers of a cast survive essentially unscathed.

0
Richard

@Lucas no humor?!?! Wayne is hilarious. I honestly read that trilogy because of Wayne.

0
Lucas

@Richard Not what I said. 😛

1
Nick

Both are really good. The name of the wind is an unfinished trilogy though so that’s pretty annoying. I would read mistborn first and hope Patrick manages to put out his next book before you finish

You’d be a damn fool to start Rothfuss. You’ll just join the ranks of us who believed his bullshit, and now he asks for money and farts around with video games, while telling us to fuck our selves.

So yea, Mistborn is good. ?

I recommend Mistborn. Sanderson is a lot more reliable about offering his fans new material and carrying on with / finishing his stories.
I found a copy of the Rothfuss cheap so bought it because I’m an opportunist… but I won’t be starting it until we have a concrete release date for the last book.

You have to read the short story about kelsier to fully understand the ending.

I understand it, just don’t like it

NOTW is beautifully written, Mistborn is very straightforward. Both are full of really good ideas and worldbuilding, but they have starkly contrasting styles.

John

NoTW is great and so is the second book. But if I had it to do all over again I would have waited to read them until the series is finished. I’ve read both books four times each and it’s frustrating once you want more and there isn’t anything else.

Definitely Rothfuss!! Not even a comparison imo

Name of the wind is an amazing read. Wise man’s fear is about 200 pages too long, but still good. And as pointed out, book three is nowhere to be seen. Considering it took 11 years to write the first, and about 7 for the second, I’m not expecting book 3 any time this side of 2020.

Still trying to get into mistborn if I’m honest, it’s just not gripping me. But equally, it’s not pants

Not the score is really that close, but I don’t know why ANY of you would recommend Rothfuss over anything else. Who cares how good it is?? There is literally no end in sight.

Sanderson has progress bars for everything he does. So do many other authors, cause they, ya know, CARE! Ask Rothfuss about the book we’ve been waiting the better part of a decade for….”fuck off”. ?.

2
Reply
Troy

that’s why i don’t recommend Kingkiller or Song of Ice and Fire.

Kingkiller is overrated IMO but it’s been so long since the last book that I don’t care anymore.

0
Dave

Oh, it’s the same deal with Martin. Wouldn’t recommend him to anyone. Martins just slightly nicer about it. Buts he’s just as much a scumbag.
After the announcement of this Ice and Fire bullshit book coming he said something along the lines of…”of course WOW is my priority, and it’s ridiculous to think otherwise”.
????
Ridiculous George?? You just announced a book THATS NOT WINDS OF WINTER!! Again, we’ve only been waiting like a decade, a book nobody asked for is now finished, but WOW is the priority?? ???.
So Rothfuss will tell you to fuck off, while George will just insult your intelligence. You pick which is worse. ?

0
Mike

This is a fair point. Start with Mistborn, and by the time you finish the series, Rothfuss may have released the third book in the trilogy. 😛

0
David

Personally I think rothfuss is a pretentious knob which has put me off his work somewhat. I really liked mistborn but I actually prefer the stuff that comes after the trilogy with the more western/modern setting . Another you could look into is peter v Brett’s demon cycle books or Brent weeks night angel . Both I personally found better than rothfuss .

Trista

Yes ! Light Bringer too!

1
ShawnQuestion author

Brent Weeks Night Angel trilogy is one of my favorite series that I have ever read. I recently caught up in his Lightbringer series also. Is the Demon Cycle similar to an extent?

1
David

@Shawn demon cycle is different but just as well written in my opinion . It covers a unique magic system and a new world based on demons and wards etc . There’s 5 books I think in the series and a couple of novellas . Well worth the read though . Think I remember reading something about the film rights being bought by the same people that did resident evil but then who knows how long that would take as with any fantasy book it’s hit and miss if they actually make the film or if they do they do it right

0
Dave

Demon Cycle is awesome. I’ve read twice, and will read it again.

1
Troy

Demon Cycle was 2 books too long.

I liked the first two books, the 3rd was okay and the 4th just dragged. Haven’t been able to bring myself to read the last book.

0
Dave

I think it’s about 5 books too short. So there! ?

1
Trista

Daylight war dragged for me but I think it’s the lead POV in that book that brought down it. You get a different main pov in each book. The first and last focus on the actual MAIN POV. It’s such a good story that it’s worth one book that’s not as good as the others.

Read both? If you have to choose pick Name of the Wind.its not done yet and qe have been waiting for the third book for 7 years. But the first two are so good ot is worth the agony

Name of the Wind as long as you can deal with the fact that Book 3 has yet to be written and no idea when it might happen. Otherwise I’d go with Mistborn.
