Not necessarily a ghost story, but still spooky and a surprise ending, for me anyway. Totally unexpected. Short story called Circumstance by Harriet Elizabeth Prescott Spofford.

“The Last to See Me” by M. Dressler. My book group really enjoyed it. Its set in northern Cal. There’s some info about life in the eighteen hundreds. And much about the lower and upper classes.I don’t often read ghost stories, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

I’ve got two old fashioned ghost stories for you. Both excellent. The Diviners by Libba Bray is very scary. And the Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson is creepy and scary. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9802372-the-name-of-the-star

Nora Robert, In the Garden series, 3 books (blue daliah, red lily, black rose) each reveal a little more about the ghost… one of my favorite spooky but good solid story lines…

The Woman in the Woods, John Connolly. Just finished this. It has a ghost but I would describe it as a semi supernatural story not s traditional ghost story.

@Deborah you will never look at a toy telephone the same way. Mors is the creepiest character I ever read, not even in Stephen King.
