DI Dylan series by RC @R. I love the characters, there’s also always a good twist or two to the plot. Procedurally wise they are always spot on.

I love Mark Billingham’s books (more than Ian Rankin’s), Peter James’ Dead series is excellent (similar to Thorne in many ways). Val McDermid’s Tony & Carol series is one of my faves for tension, and The Mermaids Singing is the first in the series and one of the best.

Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy series – set in Northern Ireland in the 1980s. Brilliant and lots of black humour. Also Stuart MacBride – Logan series set in Aberdeen.

If you like a background of history and archeology as well as mystery, Kate Ellis’ Wesley Peterson series is really good. I’ve lost count on how many there are, but they never disappoint!

Helen Durrant is really good. I’ve read her 3 series. I love any series by James Patterson especially his NYPD Red series. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve gone for Peter Robinson’s dci banks I loved the tv series so I’m guessing the books are even grittier. I shall make my way down the other suggestions in time there looks to be a lot of choice!!
