I don’t know if it’s a retelling so much as a nod to lots of common fairy tale themes but John Connolly’s The Book of Lost Things springs to mind 🙂

If you can find it… read proper, uncensored versions of The Grimm’s Fairy Tales… without all the Disney sugarcoating… also if you find it watch this horror-musical called The Lure. Which is a Polish movie about mermaids…the way mermaids are supposed to be

I love what Mercedes Lackey has done to many well known fairy tales, her Fairy Godmother series, her Elemental series, and The Fire Rose which is a stand alone but seems it must have inspired her to do the Elemental series, and her versions of Swan Lake, called the Black Swan and the Russian fairy tale the Firebird.

The Child Thief by Gerald Brom was awesome. It is a very twisted version of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.

It’s a horror book so don’t read if you’re not into that stuff.

The 500 kingdoms series by Mercedes Lackey was great. Fantasy genre.

Spindle, spelled, of beauty and beast, the Lunar Chronicles, lost in a book…

Neil Gaiman has some good graphic novel retellings. One of them is called, “Spindle”. I can’t remember the other, atm.

It’s Hansel and Gretel, though I think I spelled it wrong.

I said the same she is brilliant. Have you read Gregory Maguire? He did the Wicked books. Most of his are set around corrupted fairy tales too.

1
Pamela

I have not!

1
Ria

@Pamela he has done one called After Alice, he did a corrupted version of Cinderella, Mirror mirror was a Snow White loosely based version. The Wicked series are a more grown up take on Wizard of Oz.

0
Pamela

I feel like I have those on my list lol

Thursday by Catherine Storr is my favorite. It’s a children’s book but it’s a modern retelling of Tam Lin.

Peas and Princesses by Aleese Hughes. It’s quick and fun, but definitely a little dark. I like that type of thing, though. I think her second book is supposed to come out soon, too. I read it through Kindle Unlimited. I think she also sells other editions on Amazon.
