I just got it over the weekend and tonight I read the first three pages. The writing is superb. I am from that area of NC and I can smell the salt air, hear the creatures in the bogs and marshes, see the landscape shaped by weather. This is going to be a wonderful read!

Her language is so descriptive! I’m NOT from there and now feel like I’ve explored much of the area

I’m about 12-13 chapters in and I’m frustrated with what is happening.. I almost want to quit- I’m guessing it’s worth sticking with it!

James it is about a young girl who is abandoned by her mother at age 6, her siblings move away in short turn to escape the wrath of her alcoholic and abusive father. Soon after they all leave, her father disappears, never to return. She is 7 years old in a swamp all on her own. She learns to live on her own, never goes to school (but one day) and makes a friend in Jumpin and his wife Mabel, she also meets a young boy along the way who teaches her how to read. She is known around town as Marsh Girl, totally ostracized, all on her own. Her tale is amazing.
