I loved it too. Took me maybe two weeks. But that’s about the rate I read books because of work. School and being a mama.

Really enjoyed it. There’s a documentary on Amazon Prime on this subject. I believe the title is Orphan Train. It’s not this book. It is the same subject.

Such a sad book. The story really stuck with me. And I read it when my son was under a year old so I had lots of tears while reading.

Do not love the sadness of the books, hate them, but like when authors can articulate about the sadness.??

I don’t mind sad if the story is good. I will admit I do like some sort of light at the end of the tunnel though. If I wanted a black hole of despair I’d just watch the news.

@Sandra that is an excellent reply, I turn the news off every time it appears.??

@Michael I on the other hand enjoy the sad stories. In reality I tend to have a cold heart. But when it comes to a good book, my heart feels things that I don’t usually feel.

@Kristin I really like that reply, you echo me.??

@Kristin books are a safe place for so many of us ?❤️

@Sandra I don’t know if I would call it safe, but from 40 years of treacherous law enforcement, I say a fair assessment.???

It was our community read a few years ago and the author came to town and talked about the book. She’s a good speaker and very nice.

Loved it and kept wondering why we never learned about this part of American history in school!

I know I didn’t learn about it! And I wonder why as well. I feel that is something that should be taught. I was already telling my son about it when he asked what my book was about. I told minimally because he’s only five. But still, I feel it’s important he knows.

Not knowing about the orphans sent out West, I enjoyed the book for the story and the history

Read it for both of my book clubs. Everyone in both groups liked it. I learned that there were people from my hometown in eastern Iowa that arrived via an orphan train and were taken in by local families. It is so much more interesting to learn about history through novels like this than the history textbooks I remember.

I loved it! I love historical fiction because it brings a certain period of time to life for me. I had no idea there were orphan trains. How incredibly sad for these children.
