Just finished Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy after reading the Book Thief, The Nightingale, Daughters of the Night Sky, White Rose, Black Forest, A Gentleman in Moscow, Beneath a Scarlet Sky and Unbroken. All I can say is that my parent’s generation was truly the greatest generation we have ever witnessed, and I am so fortunate to have been able to talk to my mom and dad about serving in the army and Red Cross respectively in Africa, France and Italy. My mom drove an ambulance and worked a club car, and my dad was a communications specialist..which meant he was the guy with the radio in all those battles. They were proud to serve and loved this country.

I recently had someone tell me I needed to “quit reading this crap” because it is depressing and I’m being obsessive. I so wanted to tell them about the true heroes you meet in these books and all the different perspectives, the empathy you feel at their suffering but also the joy you feel at their triumphs. Unfortunately, this person wouldn’t have listened anyway but I wish others knew there is so much more to a book than its basic subject matter.

It could be depressing if you let it but I look at it as living history and realize there is so much I didn’t know. It is so well written I felt I was there on the outside looking in. I wanted to help these people.
