@Angela, the last book I read of his was called The Christmas Wedding. I was so disappointed that I am reluctant to pick up anything with his name on it now.
I’ve tried 1st to Die and Along Came a Spider. I feel like they’re easy reads. I feel the writing’s a little poor, kind of like you know he’s busting the book out in a week. I disliked him writing from a woman’s perspective in 1st to Die, the emotional descriptions were awkward.
According to an interview he gave, the co-authors have the ideas but he knows how to write them. As a teacher of writing at a university, I find his writing extremely offensive. Paragraphs and chapters of one sentence…really? I refuse to read any of his books and I use the word books very loosely.
Good points, but to me, he is just a franchise. His ideas, these authors writing in “his style” (short, choppy paragraphs and chapters), and if they do a good enough job, their names on the cover along with his. I read very few of his books, too.
I agree with the consensus here…. the earlier Alex Cross books were fantastic really -but the last few I read seemed redundant – He wrote some other great stuff also a while back – but since the co-authoring, there’s not much I would recommend
Read something else! 🙂 No seriously….we all have different tastes. If one author or genre isn’t entertaining you, move on. It doesn’t matter if everyone else loves it.
I really like his books, but it might make a difference which ones you’re reading. I like the Women’s Murder Club, and I really liked the Maximum Ride series.
I enjoyed the ones about the New York detective on audio book. His books are frankly ridiculous with the most unbelievable events but those ones I found very entertaining.
I don’t like them, though I do love mystery and thrillers a lot. His style is not my cup of tea. Plus he stopped writing himself long ago, just co-signs, which is another off-putting detail for me.
I have enjoyed the books that he has written on his one. I have not read any of the book that he has co-authors on. My favorite book of his is “Sam’s Letters to Jennifer”. It is not a thriller.
So do I!!
Which ones are you reading??
Im glad to hear im not the only one.x
I tried a long time ago so I don’t remember the name of the book. But I see so many good comments. It perplexes me.
Think the book series ones are better Alex Cross,Michael Bennett and Womens Murder Club.
Totally agree ☝️☝️☝️
I loved his earlier ones but the past few havent been great
@Angela, I agree with you. It seems that he collaborates with new writers merely to lend his name to a book cover!
@Olive yes and they are much shorter than the earlier ones too. No real character development xx
@Angela, the last book I read of his was called The Christmas Wedding. I was so disappointed that I am reluctant to pick up anything with his name on it now.
Which ones have you tried? My first was When The Wind Blows, my favorite was Suzanne’s Diary For Nicholas.
Loved this book. It is one I’ve kept in my collection.
I never could either ?♀️
Along came a spider and kiss the girls were great reads, I haven’t read more recent ones X
I think his writing is not as good as it used to be. His earlier works would keep me up at night, I couldn’t put them down!
A recent one I just read was Murder Games. Very good read
I also preferred more of his earlier books
thank you. I will try to read his earlier books and stay away from the ones with 2 authors.
I love his stand alones. Honey moon. Beach house. Invisible murder games but his latest ones are not great
Which of the 12 writers who are James Patterson is the one you have a problem with?
I don’t have a problem with any of them. I am just saying I like his stand alones rather than his series and I don’t like his Bookshots
I’m not a fan.
I love his books
I find them all so so easy to get into but have read too many now.
Yes Thats It. Poor writing, formulaic, and predictable. Exactly
I tried the women’s murder club but got bored 7 books in.
Really like Zoo & Zoo 2 x
Too predictable.
I’ve loved them all.
I’m currently reading The President Is Missing
@Kim I have that one my TR list x
I couldn’t either. I prefer a deeper content than he writes.
He’s a wonderful writer. One of my favorites!
I used to love his books but they have gotten old and repetitive. I only read the Michael Bennett books now but who knows how long that will last
I agree that they’ve become repetitive.
I love his Alex Cross series
I like some of them. It just depends on the premise.
Certain ones I like but other ones get a bit too gruesome for me
I got attacked for saying I don’t like him. Glad to know I’m not the only one.
just read something else… 🙂
Well, it all depends on which of his authors actually is doing the writing.
According to an interview he gave, the co-authors have the ideas but he knows how to write them. As a teacher of writing at a university, I find his writing extremely offensive. Paragraphs and chapters of one sentence…really? I refuse to read any of his books and I use the word books very loosely.

I love his Alex Cross series. Those are great. Just skop the ones he writes with other authors.
@Cassiek good advice!
Thank you… 🙂
I love his Women’s club series.
YES!!!
Some are better than others!
A formula writer…ugh
I’m over him, too predictable. And those shorter than short chapters started to annoy me.
I really liked his earlier stuff. The ones with Alex Cross in them. But after that I felt each book was the same as another I have stopped reading him
His early Alex Cross books were great. The Women’s Murder club series are better too.
I like his Maximum Ride series
That’s the series that got me hooked on his writing to begin with!
That series came from When The When Blows.
@January No it didn’t.
I liked the Alex Cross books and the Women’s Murder series.
I agree with the consensus here…. the earlier Alex Cross books were fantastic really -but the last few I read seemed redundant – He wrote some other great stuff also a while back – but since the co-authoring, there’s not much I would recommend
Me, too.
Read something else! 🙂 No seriously….we all have different tastes. If one author or genre isn’t entertaining you, move on. It doesn’t matter if everyone else loves it.
I like most of them.
I’m reading John Le Carré now – I got overdosed on James Patterson
It’s my theory that writers have just so many great books in them.
I liked his early stuff better than the collaborations.
Same. Tried several times and just keep giving up.
I really like his books, but it might make a difference which ones you’re reading. I like the Women’s Murder Club, and I really liked the Maximum Ride series.
read a few, couple were good, but too inconsistent to me,, some good, some bad…
When I first started it was ok. As I read more they seem to be cookie cutter. Real formula type reads.
Loathed the book I read, would never read him again.
I love his Alex Cross series and the Women’s Murder Club series
Too formulaic.
Nope, I find him boring, and then I’m frustrated I spent money on him
I couldn’t either. I started reading women’s murder club and hated it.
I loved The President Is Missing but otherwise yes.
I like the books he writes with Candice Fox
Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson is one of my favorite books!!
I enjoy them. Books on tape for road trips.
I used to love reading his book (about 25 years ago), but they are all the same and the writing went downhill over the years…
I really enjoy his work. One of my favourites!
Sam’s letters to Jennifer is one of my faves of his ?
I enjoyed the ones about the New York detective on audio book. His books are frankly ridiculous with the most unbelievable events but those ones I found very entertaining.
Yes I also did like the Murder House and the Michael Bennett Series.
Michael Bennett, that’s it. Thank you x
some r ok
I stopped reading “his” books when he (and the publisher) began allowing other writers to use his name on the covers just to sell books.
His early ones are good. But like most prolific author’s, he followed a recipe. I prefer authors who do not churn out a book every year or two.
I feel the same way. Now Daniel Silva…that’s another story. I hate coming to the end of his books
I don’t like them, though I do love mystery and thrillers a lot. His style is not my cup of tea. Plus he stopped writing himself long ago, just co-signs, which is another off-putting detail for me.
I can’t really either.
I have enjoyed the books that he has written on his one. I have not read any of the book that he has co-authors on. My favorite book of his is “Sam’s Letters to Jennifer”. It is not a thriller.
If it is written by just him, they are fast to get through. When someone else is writing them with him, it’s slower for me to get through them.
Try reading Murder House. I am not a big fan of his but I loved this book.
I have to accept the plot will be a tv script
Some are good. Some are sheer rubbish.
Earlier books are better and I don’t like his collaborations with others at all xx
I cant either
