I don’t recall coming across made up words, but yes, there are hefty chunks of French, so if you’re not a speaker/reader of the language, looking up translations may help. Although skipping the French bits entirely wouldn’t detract from the story itself.
It’s an excellent novel with beautiful writing, but still deals with pedophilia and is quite immoral. Do read it with an awareness that it is morally wrong and enjoy!
This book was published in the 1950s and so may be a bit out of date. It was written in a flowing , seductive and what I would call a liquid (oily) language, while describing a lustful old man as he attempts to seduce a young 14 year old child.
There’s nothing nice or spiritual about pedophilia, nor is there anything decent about beastiality or the world wide practice today of physical, sexual or emotional abuse of women.
I’ve read this book and I would not recommend it for reading by others , especially in the World as we know it today.
I bought the book recently too because someone recommended it to me, read first few pages and found it so slow. I can’t bring myself to giving it a complete read. ?
Love that book. Beautiful writing. Excellent literature. It’s one of my favourites.
You should buy and read anything you want.
I was unable to finished it. Don’t like reading about pedophilia.
I Felt Dirty”—-Readin’ It!!! Stopped—-First Book Ever!!! In 691/2 Years,I Put Down!!!
yes!
Make sure you have a dictionary by your side when you read it. Or Google because some of the words he made up and some is in French.

It’s worth reading. Not high on my list of favourites, but yeah……
Yes why would you think otherwise..it’s one of the greatest novels ever written
I just bought it as well.
I could not or would not ever want to…but you should read what you want…
I read it when I was still a kid myself… Liked the book more than the movie. But that’s usually the case, isn’t it? 🙂
Yes, it is excellent and beautifully written
HATE
Most rigorous fiction I’ve ever read.

I have been wanting to read it. Couldn’t find it at the library.
Really? That’s so strange. It’s considered a classic so I thought they’d have it for sure.
Oh sure. Nabokov is a good writer.
