I highly recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain.

I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain. My heart is happy and my heart is broken. Great book! I highly recommend it.

This is on my Very Best list. It is so much more than a Dog Book.

When you’re ready for another dog book, I recommend: A Dog’s Purpose…Walking in Circles Before Laying Down…Roam…A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog

Does a dog die in the story? I can’t read a book where a dog dies. Too sad.

and no…:-)

Catherine

??? that cleared it up.

2
Pam

@Mary Still, when someone asks me if animals die, I cannot tell a lie, because I know that they sometimes can’t deal with that kind of pain. Speaking from experience.

3
Pam

@Catherine The dog dies. Depending on your beliefs, you may “read” about them again. If you are open to that belief, it is a wonderful story. But you will still cry your eyes out…

1
Catherine

@Pam thank you. I read Marley and Me and I bawled like a baby. Since then I haven’t wanted or I have trepidation about any dog dying in a novel. I know , strange.

2
BethandBrad

Edgar Sawtelle did that to me. Made me ugly cry without warning. That’s the last audio book I listened to at work.

2
Pam

@Catherine nope, not strange, I totally get it. But it is a lovely book if you believe in reincarnation.

Pam

@BethandBrad Me too!

@Pam, I am that person, so thank you!

Same here. I love dogs so every time my husband sees a book or movie about a dog he gets excited and I have to tell him, “If it’s about a dog, the dog dies at the end. That’s how it works and I can’t handle those kinds of emotions.”

That being said, I absolutely adored The Art of Racing in the Rain, although I won’t reread it solely because of the dog death.

Perfect summation! I always say that it ends the way it is supposed to end. One of my favorite books!

Spoiler-maybe- I finished this book last night. Overall I enjoyed it. We often speculate what our dog is thinking, joking with each other about what she would say if she could talk, so I enjoyed that the author wrote from the dogs point of view.
