As much as I love TFIOS, Paper Towns was more enjoyable because of the touch of mystery in it.

I’d say TFIOS. While I enjoyed parts of Paper Towns (mostly the side characters), the whole driving force of the book irritated me.

This is exactly how I felt about it.

Both Paper Towns and looking for Alaska, I just didn’t understand why the main characters liked the girls they were interested in. So it kind of annoyed me the whole time. Otherwise, I liked the friends in both books. All of his books have great side characters.

I really liked Ben, Radar, Angela & Lacey. Q and Margo annoyed me to no end. I did however like the message it sent.. But annoying MC nonetheless.

Jenny

Ugh I just saw zero appeal in Margo haha. I kept thinking, “Why are you even looking for her?” ?

1
VanessaQuestion author

I found Q to be a stalker and his obsession wasn’t endearing at all. Margo was a flake with excuses.

Jenny

Haha yes! I loved the friends though. They kept me reading ?

The Fault in out Stars is so amazing that no other Johnson Green book will ever live up to that one, so my advice save it for later and enjoy some of his over books first ?

I’d say Paper Towns first. I haven’t read it but I think it will help to get used to his language before you read The Fault In Our Stars. I hadn’t been able to appreciate each part of it because I was having a hard time adapting myself to his way of writing.

Depends. I loved The Fault in Our Stars and was very disappointed that Paper Towns was nowhere near as amazing. But there are many people out there who really loved both – TFIOS is probably less depressing, though.

Ok so I’ve read Paper Towns and it was like 3 stars. I will see if I can find Looking for Alaska. Then I’ll read TFIOS. If after 3 books he’s still a 3 author he might not be for me lol

I think this is an unpopular opinion, but I really liked An Abundance of Katherines, more than Paper Towns or Looking for Alaska. So I would still give it a try it you end up not caring for the others ?

1
VanessaQuestion author

I really like giving authors a chance but Paper Towns was a little underwhelming. I read it first because it seemed to be less popular than TFIOS. If I find An Abundance of Katherine’s first I’ll give it a go.

1
Jennipher

If you’re going in with high expectations, read The Fault in Our Stars. TFIOS was my first John Green book, and I adored it. Then I went on to read Paper Towns and was quite underwhelmed, but that was just my preference. I’m also not much of a contemporary reader, so they kinda have to hit me really hard in the feels for me to enjoy them.

1
Reply
VanessaQuestion author

That’s why I wanted to read Paper Towns first because I didn’t want to read it after something amazing ? I’m with you, I’m not much of a contemporary reader and it takes a lot.

1
Jennipher

Paper Towns was 3/5 stars for me. Without spoiling, the book brings you closer and closer to a climax that I personally feel wasn’t justified enough, but like I said, that’s just the way I read it. Turtles All the Way Down is getting some incredible reviews now too (I can’t put any input because I haven’t read it yet), but you might want to try that one out as well. Possibly read it first, but it’s really just what you want to read first.
