People are always surprised when I mention it as a great read. Very profound story and so well written by Hugo. Disney repelled people from it and it’s such a shame.

He writes beautifully (if you can get through all the long winded history lessons.)
When he described Quasimodo in the stocks and the way the people treated him and then him seeing Frollo coming on his donkey (and then leaving) I cried and cried. So heartbreaking.
(Makes me a little teary just thinking about it.)

And you’re right about people being repelled from it because of the Disney version. I don’t know why they have to dumb things down so much. It has the potential to be another Les Mis but because of the cartoon version it’s been taken from the heartbreaking story that it is to a light and fluffy children’s story.

I read it a few years ago. We did it in our book club. I absolutely loved it! Even all the backstory on France and the history… Victor Hugo does that all the time … He did it in Les Miserables too. I just love his style of writing. Hunchback was just an amazing book!

I read it back in the days. I must have been 11 or 12 years old. I still didn’t forgive Hugo for that ending.

Oh I know I know I know! I actually had to read it a few times because I just could not believe how tragically it ended.

I found the first half a little slow and heavy. It really doesn’t get in to the story until quite far along. Once they do though it’s great.

Anyone who likes a nice tidy ending shouldn’t read this. I found the end frustrating.
