@Maureen Totally, though it’s a pretty new book. My son read it, and loved it so much, he made me read it. It absolutely blew my mind. It’s not an easy read, as it is so complex, so not one to romp through.

MR James, his short stories are classics of the genre. And ground breaking for their time.

I immediately thought of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, but have just stumbled on this fine list that includes many classic tales – and through which you can access dozens and dozens of e-texts. Have fun! http://www.underworldtales.com/classic.htm

The Three Imposters by Arthur Machen, or any of Machen’s writing.

Susan Hill’s The Woman In Black (its modern, but written as a Victorian style thriller).

M.R. James.
Edgar Allan Poe.
H.P Lovecraft.

@Natalia curious fact, that book has also gone by the titles: Ten Little Indians also Ten Little Niggers. ( No offense to anyone.)

@Kris oh I totally know it! I read the book first in Russian and it was translated as ten little negroes. The Russian movie is as well kinda spooky ?

The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes. It’s a classic of psychological suspense and I found it still effective even after a century.

Kevin Gassaway looking for it through my library system, I think I’ve found a movie! Contained with a Hitchcock film. I guess I’ll look on Kindle for the book. I wanted obscure and you’ve offered such, thanks.

Kris Marshall It’s in the public domain, so you should be able to find it free for Kindle, or you can download it from Project Gutenberg in mobi format (there’s also a well-narrated LibriVox version, if you like audiobooks).

The Alfred Hitchcock film is one of his earliest hits, dating from the silent era (it was made in 1927, I believe). There’s also been a more recent version starring Alfred Molina, updated to the present day, but I haven’t seen it.

I really like The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula. Old school horror. ?
