I got peer pressured into reading it a few years ago. All I have to say is that I still want my time and money back!! Awful book, horrendous writing, and enormous waste of time. Honestly, they should use this as a torture device to get info out of spies/traitors/etc!

I’m not going to say I liked them, but I thought they were marginally better as the books went on, only because the second and third books at least had a plot (albeit weak). Lol

Honestly? It depends on you. It is not great literature (REALLY not), but it is a highly entertaining, mostly easy read.

Its awful, not just the story itself but the writing is awful as well.

I liked it for the background story and psychological aspect of it, it’s how I read things, I didn’t like one character, but then she was young, naive and all about herself

2
Reply
Emma

It depends on your taste but personally I would give it a miss! All my friends were reading it so I gave it a try and couldn’t make it past the second chapter. The writing is terrible and no real storyline other than a guy who likes to tie women up and slap them.

The funny thing is, the writer (I can’t call her an author sorry) made an absolute fortune from the series and films…

Honestly make your own mind up. I personally liked the series and those that hate are entitled to do that. Just remember at the end of the day it’s just a fiction book and the main character is of age and understanding about what is happening to her

I think it’s more of a book/series for people who dont enjoy actually reading. I couldn’t get through the first few pages of it because of how it was written. I think all the hype is just because of the sex scenes, and alot of people are living vicariously through that book loll. Dont bother, you’ll truly get nothing out of it

I’m not trying be rude or tell you what to think. Please don’t judge the readers, just the book. I did enjoy reading the books and I’m a book nerd/hoarder. I love really great books like The Godfather and Gone With the Wind. But I can still enjoy the mindless stuff like Twilight and 50 shades. Just please don’t judge people for what they read. 🙂

1
Nicole

@Briana, I’m sorry, but whose judging? I didnt judge anyone actually. It’s my opinion on the book and the series……if you do not agree, there is no reason to get offended or feel judged. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it’s not ur place to tell me how to feel about it 🙂

? ok sorry like I said wasn’t trying to be rude. I Shouldn’t have even commented. ?

Really it’s the quality of Shades of Grey that bothered me. It’s okay to read a kinky sex book, but the quality ????? If you can, go to Amazon and read some of the reviews. Some of the people have counted how many times some phrases are repeated- and that was pretty funny 🙂

With so many skilled and remarkable writers in the world and not enough time to read every great book, why read something as unimaginative and unremarkable as this?

4
Reply
Samantha

No. They are badly written, the plot is weak, the characters are even weaker. I have nothing against the topic itself, just the writing. To show you how much I hate them, I never, ever give books away or loan them out to people as I know I will never get them back. Yet, I was very happy to let these ones go and, I didn’t care that they never came back to me….

As a BDSM practitioner. No. This is not BDSM. This is outright abuse. BDSM is all about consent, respect, and safe practices. 50 Shades of abuse is nothing like BDSM

When you read a long book, make sure it’s a good one. Try Dickens, George Eliot, Dostoevsky.

I’ve read all 3 books and loved them I read these kind of book’s, but I read other kinds as well. These book’s will give you a peek into what BDSM is about and yes it’s considered soft porn and if you’ve seen the movies they tried to stay close to the book just like the Harry Potter series, but I preferred the books over the movies for 50 shades to have been poorly written it sure made the author a helluva lot of money and for it to be on the movie screen I’d say E L James did a fantastic job.

2
Reply
Agnes

These books are NOT a representation of BDSM. These books are a How-NOT-To-Treat a person EVER.. It’s a dangerous display of unchecked abuse and control.

3
Agnes

This book is abusive garbage. If you want a good book there are plenty others that don’t deal with so many, unchecked, romanticised abusive behaviours.

It’s a good story. I liked learning the backgrounds of the characters; however, it is badly written, if you can get that. Good story, poorly written. If you like this type of story/series, I would suggest The Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day. Nice character development and better writing.

Depends , you must find abuse, patterns of behavior, therapy, violence, plane crashes, opulence, adoption, stalking, death threats, emotional age vs business savvy, success, happiness in the end.
The book is much different than the movie and then there are the books from Christian grey’s point of view.
